I was browing a popular auction site last week and ran across a very good deal on a New In Box BK-7 and there was a "buy it now" option with free shipping so I bought it. Of course I immediately was pulled over to this site to start looking at what people are doing to their Beckers, and catch up on the cool people in the knife community- time well spent! So I just realized that my "great deal" was on a 3rd Gen Blade with the laser etched logo and new finish.(Ugg...) The knife will end up stripped and customized anyway, but is the new generation of blades as good as the 2nd gen stuff? I have poked around on the site during the weekend and I havent found much opinion on this so I will just ask the forum:

Would you keep this one and start to enjoy custimizing it, or would you sell it and instead find a 2nd generation BK-7?

The BK-7 will be a camping/fishing/hunting knife and I was specifically looking for the 7" blade to use as a chopper/baton.

I am really interested in opinions on this guys so please chime in.

it's a KaBar with a Becker name on it. Generations mean nothing here. same or better quality.

if you sell it, you're losing money.

With the laser etch, your 7 hasn't been exposed to the stresses of stamping like the previous models, so conceivably the newer models are going to be stronger than the older ones. The quality of the steel is the same.

The only difference is the coating and the laser etch vs a stamp. The stamp induces stress into the blade and actually creates a weak spot. Few have failed because of this but it can possibly happen. So actually the laser etch knives are better. Everything else about the knife is the same in every possible way. It is the best version of the BK7 made to date and you should absolutely keep it. Take the money you would have spent on another BK7 and get a BK9. You can't not have a 9.

You'll love it and eventually will want one w/ a coating and one stripped anyways :)... So you can't go wrong either way. Congrats!
