Just got a Leatherman Wingman (Video)

Just received my Leatherman Wingman in the mail today. It's my second multi-tool after my Gerber Crucial. Though I like the Crucial, I wanted something a little beefier, and I really liked the inclusion of scissors and the package opener on the Wingman. Also, the placement of the tools is completely different, as the Crucial only has the tools on the outside whereas the Leatherman has them both inner and outer. I've attached my unboxing video. Has anyone ever had this combination of multi-tools, and if so, which one did they prefer?

Nice unboxing video. A lot of people hate on the Wingman/Sidekick line, but they are decent tools for the money.

When deploying the inside tools it can sometimes be hard to get your nail in there and the hole on the underside of the handle was made so you can push the tools up and get to them easier. Figured I would mention it just in case you did not know.

You mentioned you did not really like serrated blades. If you get a Sidekick you can very easily swap out the blade for the Sidekicks plain edge. You can even take inside tools from the Sidekick and replace others from the Wingman if you so desire. You can even use parts to make a single sided knife with tools and pocket clip. I will take pictures of this if you are interested.

Here is my modded Wingman with plain edge blade. I also removed the can opener and replaced it with the small serrated from the Sidekick.

Really glad to hear that you liked the unboxing video!

Thanks for the tip about how you can use the underside of the handle to push the tools up. Last night I trimmed my thumbnail, and I found the tools very difficult to deploy. That's a big help!

I've heard that you can mod/replace/remove tools from the Leatherman's. I like what you've done with yours. I think the modding is a real bonus - I've heard of guys having to remove the knives so they can take them to work. I did some sharpening of the knife, and I got it shaving sharp now. It's probably not necessary on a multi-tool, but I like to keep things as sharp as possible I suppose.

I haven't really read too much negative about the Wingman (I haven't looked to hard) - though I did see one video where someone complained the the steel was a little soft. Personally, I think it fits my intended use well. I don't have a real need for a heavy use multi-tool. I just want something to be able to pull out at work or at home when I need to do light duties. I have VG-10 and S30V knives to pull out if I need to any serious cutting.

Thanks for your reply, and the tip about being able to push the tools forward from the backside of the handle is incredibly useful. Thanks!!!

Here are pics of what you can do with extra parts. I made something similar myself, but these pictures are not of mine. I will link to the thread on another forum. Hope its not against the rules. I carry mine quite often. As you can see the scissors from a Leatherman Wave fit without modification.

Why Leatherman did not think of this themselves is beyond me. Its like a Leatherman Swiss Army knife.

And now I have to have one. Wow that is awesome and not something I had ever given thought to. Now I'm wishing Leatherman would produce this for the same price range and the wingman and sidekick.
