For $50 bux its hard to beat. The finish is the tinest bit lacking;but ill tell ya it feels like I could pry an elephant out of a gnats...well...I wont go there either.

Razor sharp OTB. Anybody else got one and an opinion to go with it??? Sheath needs a little help is my only gripe. By camillus description it appears if they made the sheath in the standard indestructo-plastic format it would be to heavy for "combat" carry. I would like to see that style sheath for us regular guyz though.

And for the love of God I wish LYNN Thompson had made the delta dart outa the same stuff the handles on this real knife are made of....You COULD punch a hole in a car with one of those.... :D

I'm this close > < to buying one myself. Just wondering what you thought of the balance. Is it blade-heavy?

Well, for $50.00 bucks or so, I still think it's a great deal.

Shane, don't hesitate at all. Buy it. The Becker C/U is the most knife for the money out there right now.

Actually its a little handle heavy but I dont mind. In the hands of a knife combat trained individual; that heavy handle with that little hammer/pry stud?? thingamabob would be hell on wheels.

Like I said handles are tuff as a futthermutther. Lynn Thompson at CS shouldve made his non metallics outa this stuff. Its got so much glass reinforcement it feels like aluminum or something. Its some swiss compound...I hate to sound so uninformed I just dont wanna get up and find the paperwork talk about runnin like a swiss watch..The BKTCU SOLD ME the Matchax and the Paratool jobber. Camillus has regained my respect!!:)

And as far as CS vs Camillus...Well just think about other options for those of us who dont line our undershorts with $100 bills...I made the terrible mistake of spending a whole 15 bux on a SUK-KNIVES (famous for holding an edge???...well 20 yrs ago yeah....maybe) at SMKW in tenn. I wonder if they really are using die-cast matchbox car metal as thier new wonder alloy.???

Thats the last "knife" I will ever purchase from such a fine upstanding "C" word company. When they print quality on the box youre in trouble....I cant even get a reply from "CHUCKIE" by email...So consider our options guyz; Lets just enjoy the new whatevers...

I have a Patrol Machete, and like the price on the Combat/Utility. Now if I could just get a Brute for that price. :) (I like recurves.)

According to some testing I recently did, the BK&T Combat/Utility 7 is a tremendous value in the $50 window. It chopped maple branches up to about 3/4" extremely well. When the branch size increased beyond about 2-3" and more extended chopping became necessary, its lack of mass and neutral balance tired me out quickly. But I like its size and blade geometry for a mid-size camp knife.

It survived two accidental 3 ft drops to concrete (one on the tip, one on the pommel) with minor scratching/impaction to the pommel surface and the extreme <1/32" end of the tip being bent over & very tiny (I'm talkin' dust-mote size) chips in the edge immediately behind the tip. That tip is still very servicable, just not NIB condition any more. The steel seems to be a usage-oriented combination of toughness & hardness.

Downside: I found the teeth on the thumb ramp overly aggressive due to their large size when used for very forceful push cutting/whittling.

Overall, I think it's a really strong performer for the price.

I agree that this knife has instantly become one of my favorites. It has to be one of the best deals going at the moment. I have big plans for it once the weather warms up and hiking/camping season starts. Now I just need to find a small tin that will fit in that long narrow pouch!

Razorblade00: The handles are made from GV6H if I'm not mistaken. Check out this link if you want a "knife" made entirely of the stuff (its the first knife on the page). Hey, for $8 how can you go wrong...look out car roofs :D .

I just got mine last week. I actually like the sheath from an operations point of view. It isn't that the kydex jobs are too heavy, it's just that they can make a whole lot of noise at the wrong times. The knife itself feels good in the hand. Very sharp OTB. Finish is tough though not my style.
For chopping, the only comparison I did was against my RTAK. Not exactly and even evaluation. The balance point on the BK-7 being right at the index finger doesn't lend itself very well to chopping. It will do it but you will tire quickly. I went through some Oak branches fairly well. With a batton it splits wood well. I don't worry in the least about breaking it.
The factory handle scales are very comfy and super tough. I don't exactly like the look but what the hell. For $40 I'm not complaining about astheticly pretty handles. I'll probably make a pair of micartas for it in the future as a fun project.
Overall, I give it a solid A.

BTW; I noticed recon in your callsign. Hoooyah. My son is going CORPS next summer for basic. I couldnt get in-- a pair of crutches in the way,but Im still a Marine at heart. WHEN IT ABSOLUTELY HAS TO BE DESTROYED OVERNIGHT--UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!! nuff said...I could go on....

Anyway the subject at hand...the reason i had a problem w/ the sheath on my bk&tuc was it rides low; and leans out when i lash it down. That and color..prefer black (WAAHHWAHH) $40??? WFD!!!

Do you know anybody that makes a generic kydex or cordura sheath that will fit the thing??

The look is OK for me; fasteners should be easy to replace--hell you can buy a new one for all the trouble. Finish---isnt everybody using this goop nowdays?? I would like to see a satin version with black micarta handles and stainless fastners...but that would mean we'd have to actually care about the knife now wouldn't it??

Id like to know where to get some of the epoxy goop this is finshed with though ...I could think of better uses..

I own a Magnum Camp (Fisk) and a Patrol Machete.

So even without handling this Combat Utility, it's easy to see how you guys think it's a lot of value at the $50 price point. I even saw it advertised at $46 and change somewhere.

It's a bit redundant to my Magnum, but if they'd do this Combat Utility at 10" to 12", I'd own one pronto.

I'll take a well designed, 0170-6 "camp" knife from a reliable, no-BS vendor anyday at that kinda price.

Razorblade,
Glad you like your C/U7! Just for clarification, we went with the early BK&T sheath style[Ethan was using that type of sheath in the early days, made for him by EAGLE] primarily after the repeated requests from former and active duty military users. The weight would not be appreciably different between a plain kydex sheath and what we have, although the nylon/kydex sheath is a little lighter. The nylon outer shell keeps the whole rig alot quieter, and the OD green nylon seems to "pass inspection" easier with unit commanders. Alot of folks really like the outside pocket for sharpeners/compass/multitool/etc.

*note to Mark J- the standard size ALTIODS tin will fit in the pouch...Ethan's idea.

The handle material is Swiss GV6H, a 60%[!] glass filled nylon. It is VERY hard and durable. They make NAILS outta this stuff for use in highly corrosive environments.

Also, Razor, do you have a extra heavy lanyard attached through the thong hole? We designed the C/U7 to be balance just SLIGHTLY forward of the "trigger" finger groove. We skeletonized quite a bit of steel out from under the scales to achieve this. Anyway, the knife is basically neutral balance, just slightly nose "heavy".

The blade finish is an epoxy powdercoat that we have tested and found quite durable for this type of finish. It isn't a "goop", but comes in a fine poedered form. Unless you have the equipment to apply it, and ovens to cure it, it wouldn't do you much good. I realize that some cutlery enthusiasts, like the good folks here on bladeforums, would prefer a satin finish. The only problem with that is that for every 1 person that likes a naked carbon blade, we would get 10 that would REALLY be upset because their blade rusts so easy, and 20 more that would rather have a black colored blade. Henry Ford was right.

Oh yeah, the bolts that secure the scales ARE stainless steel[300 series], they are black oxide coated to match the rest of the knife.

RazorbladeOO,
I'm sorry that we apparently lost your respect at some time in the past, but I'm real happy that we have it now

Thanks for being a customer! Here's a pic for everyone's viewing pleasure.....

Bayou LaFourche has the BK&T C/U-7 for a penny under $48.

This thing gave my Busse Basic 7 a run for "favorite knife" out of about ten blades tested. That's major praise from a Busse-holic like me. For the money, IMHO you'll be hard pressed to find better value than the C/U-7. However, there are reports of Cold Steel SRK seconds to be had for about $28, approximately half the price of the C/U-7. The SRK tested pretty close to the C/U-7 in my branch chopping & cutting, although its handle is NOWHERE as comfortable as the C/U-7.

I had wanted to get a CS Bush Ranger about a year ago, but after hearing such terrible things about the handles (and experiencing that sticky rubbign feeling with my dad's Recon Tanto) I decided against it. Although my Randall 14 is about the same size/ misison, this is something I wouldn't mind hacking firewood with. I have a Campanion (at home, for shame) and it feels great. If all these reports are true, I think BK&T has become my favorite production blade company. I just hope Camillus keeps this line around (and growing) for a long time.

As most of you know, I've spend a considerable amount of time afield playing with the stuff we hold so dear.

The Camillus BK-7 is much bang for the buck!
