And it's much prettier than I thought!

I've been a long time americanized-tanto-hater. But I have to say that I love how sog makes it on this one.

The action is smooth and grip is good.

BG42 is tough stuff, so I will see how it holds up in long term use in the future.

Ah, also, I am suprised to find that SOG uses torx screws on the knife axis instead of simply pivoting the blade and handle together like many other makers do for knives at this level. So it should be easier to get get an upgrade on the handle at some custom maker's.

Rock on! :p

But is it possible that the grinder only burnt the tip instead of a whole edge? Hopefully it's just the tip touched somthing before packaging...

Maybe it's just a chemical discoloration. Here's hoping.

To answer your question, it's not only possible to burn the tip of a knife during grinding, it's more likely to happen than burning the whole edge. There's less metal at the tip so heat applied there (from grinding) will build up more quickly. At the absolute tip, where both edges on either side of that tanto point meet, there's the least metal of all.

...meaning heat applied to the tip will burn that part more quickly than the rest of the tip.

The same thing happens when you put a quartered log into the fire. What catches instantly and burns first? The thin splinters, not the whole piece.
