When i say just got, i really do mean just got, the postman delivered it about forty five mins ago. My opinions on the knife are as follows;
First off i'll say that this is a nice piece, the shell inlay looks amazing. The FRN handle doesn't take away from it at all, it actually provides a very pleasant contrast. One thing that struck me was the size, i was expecting quite a small knife, and all things considered, that's what it is, but it's slender form and wide blade give it the appearance of a medium or medium/large folder IMO.
The first time i thumbed it open, i was impressed by the smooth action and the crisp lock-up, in fact smooth and crisp are two words which i think describe this knife well as a whole. This is my first experiece of the compression lock, and the first time it engaged i experienced the little 'pinch' that some have reported, but it's certainly nothing to worry about, hardly noticeable and a change in hand-positioning easily eliminates it. I expect it will take a day or two to get used to this lock and after that manipulating it should be a very smooth and natural act.
The knife was sharp out of the box, very unique blade profile, so far i like it. No blade play in any direction and already i have much more confidence in the compression lock than i do in any liner lock, it feels more secure, doesn't flex with hand pressure on the blade like most (non-Spyderco?) liner locks. The pocket clip is a three-screw style and doesn't seem to be a pocket-eater. Fit and finish on my example is good, but could be better, the finish of the FRN is a little rough around the inlay, the inlay itself has a few dents and a small rough patch, and the finger notches (nice touch) are a little uneven, however this is only noticeable under close inspection and in no way effects the looks or functionality of the knife.
Overall i'm VERY impressed with the Vesuvius and intend to make it an EDC. I will post further impressions after some use.
Have a good day :D

I'm impressed with the Vesuvius. Nice blade and handle design, strong lock (81lbs/in of blade), and good steel. I know what you mean about the inlays though, mine are kind of rough too.
Thanks,
Matt

I bought my Vesuvius today. It has blue shell inlay. I was at the local gun shop and had my mind set up to buy a SpydeRench, which I did. When I saw that blue knife, I just had to buy it too. I must have got a "plus" copy, nothing rough around the inlays at all. Crisp, smooth lockup indeed. This is one Spyderco I really like.
