Just bought an SOG SEAL 2000. It's a pretty nicely balanced knife, sized right, and is shaving sharp from the box.

I would like to sharpen this when it gets dull, I hear spyderco sells some equipment for sharpening? I really dont have the patience or time right now to learn to sharpen freehand.

And, would anyone know the edge angle of a new SEAL knife?

Thanks

Check out the Lansky sharpening systems, they get a precice and constant edge every time; their worth their high price. I am not quite sure, but my guess on the sharpening angle for a Seal 2000 would be 30 degrees.

The one I had was ~26 degrees per side. Regardless of the angle SOG specifies, the angle on yours will be different, even with the best consistency you can see 1-2 degrees of difference which can make a huge effect when sharpening with a jig. If the angle is 24 and you try sharpening at 22 you will be a *long* time before the edge gets sharp. Your best bet is to read the Joe Talmadges sharpening faq, in particular the part about using a magic marker to determine the edge angle.

Enter, I am not sure if SOG specifies an angle on their knives, you might want to ask Chris at SOG, but if they do, it's possible yours could be very close to what they say. And if they specify, and you check it and it's off some, then I am sure it would not be too much trouble to get it to the angle you like. The main thing is to get the sharpening tools you like the best, or have heard positive remarks on, and try it and see.
One good thing is it may not need sharpening for a while since it's new. I hope you like your knife, I have heard a lot of good things about the SEAL, but never owned one.

Excellent advice! Thanks Cliff.:D

As far as sharpening goes, here's a very interesting thread about sharpness and sharpening.... in the General Knife Forum - Blade Discussion Forum, "Scary Sharp? Shaving Sharp?"
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=286222&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

Of particular interest to me personally is that on pages 3 and 4 of that very long discussion some total slacker/hacker calling himself new pig hunter comments on his foibles and frustrations about sharpening his knives.... and his initial lack of success.... and then apparent success.
And some fellow calling himself Pendentive has posted some incredible video clips of cutting through paper and such with his unbelieveably sharp knives and kukri's. That fellow sure knows what he's doing !!

All I can say is, there's more than one way to sharpen a knife whether it's a SOG Seal 2000 or WWII-vintage steel.

Cheers,

Carl
