Just got an Umnum

I'm kinda excited about it! Just a little bit.

It should be here by Friday. Earlier this year I bought my first Sebenza. A Large 21 with micarta inlays. I swore I was going to carry it. Well, it's been 3 months and I still can't bring myself to carry it. It is just too pretty. Sooo to remedy this situation, I've gotten myself a new UmNum which I am vowing to EDC , and while my EDC needs aren't anything qualifying as abuse, they can still get to be pretty heavy use. My thoughts on actually using my Umnum are because it's all TI and I can simply send it in for a Spa treatment and have her restored as like new.

My question to the Veterans is...Am I going to regret the Umnumzaan? Just how thick is it in comparison to a large micarta. I was hoping for a beefier knife (thicker) in the Umnum. Is the size simply going to be marginal? Anyone have any thoughts on the Umnum as a whole that I should know?

I did do research before I bought, as I do with all my tools, just didn't know if I was missing any key points.

Thanks in advance for any info!

EDIT: I was initially looking at the Spyderco K2's for a sort of non timid user, but after I saw some pics of the pivot size and some other things that sort of struck me as worrisome I decided to go with what I know....CRK's quality

Just so you know, CRK will do a full spa treatment on Micarta Inlay Sebenzas. It's the only inlay that they will do a full treatment on, including re-sandblasting the handles.

And congrats on the Umnum, I'm hoping to pick one up in the near future.

See, I have gotten mixed answers to that question. I know I could simply call CRK, but it slips my mind during business hours. My initial impressions were as you mentioned. That it was the only inlay they would reblast. When I posted a thread on the topic, many members said they wouldn't or it was the luck of the draw

A quick call to CRK will put your mind at rest. I believe they will refurb the micarta.

Congrats on your new CRK's. I have several 21's and 2 older model Zaan's. I like my large 21 micarta best of all my 21's....I 've a large

Glorious coming on Wednesday from ES. so that might change. IMO the grip on the micarta and inlays is better than the smoother CRK's. Use your

micarta 21 is a Great knife. The blade thickness on the Zaan is .015 thicker than the 21....not something you really notice or see very well.

The store with the special edges....20 off thru May.

Congratulations! I look forward to hearing your impressions upon arrival. I'm considering picking up an Umnumzaan soon, myself. I currently have a Large 21 Insingo and Large 21 Tanto Micarta, the micarta being my favorite, and I think an Umnumzaan and Nyala would make for a perfect CRK family.

I'll most certainly report back to everyone my first impressions on the 'Zaan. I'm sure I'll be nothing but impressed. I might even try to do one of my very own first reviews.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I knew I was going to catch a bit of fire for not putting the Micarta in my pocket....it's just soo hard to do when it's your first CRK and you can only compare it to other Benchmades. It feels kinda like using the Mona Lisa to wipe up a spilled Beer

I love that comparison. I truly laughed out loud when I read it.

The Zaan is awesome, it is amazing just as any CRK is. Great for a work knife for sure.

Once it gets some battle scars and character marks, then it truly becomes yours. Kind of like a blood bond with it, but nicer. :)

Congrats on your purchase!
The Umnumzaan is a great design and user blade. That swedge is a great scrapper when needed and that groove on top of the blade is very inviting for your thumb for controlled cuts.
Be careful after using it though because your micarta 21 will soon follow it's way into your pockets. :D

I sold mine and now I want mine back:( I still have a small a 21 and a 25 but the zaan is a mean defensive blade!!
