I went to go see a childhood friend and mentor doing time in one of the pintas (prisons) up in Walker County. I don't really know what to say about the matter. He was like my older brother when I was a kid, I looked up to him and wanted to be just like him when I got older. Then in late 96, his horrific temper landed him a 10-60 sentence behind bars. To see someone you care alot about, who you'd do anything for, to see them locked up, to know there's a good chance they're going to grow old in there, it's just messed up. I remember when I was a kid thinking I wanted to be just like him, seeing him this weekend makes me thank the good lord it didn't turn out that way. I guess that's all I have to say about the matter.

Well...

I had a few "friends" that went to prison. I only visited one. I thought the same thing about him that I did about the others. All I ever thought was, "What an idiot. I wonder how his victim is doing." I went to visit the one guy because he was like a big brother to me at the time. I still thought he was a selfish jerk and told him as much. He's no longer with us.

Nope, I can't say that I ever had sympathy for any of them.

If this is in Texas ,it's pretty much a one-way prison. Used to date a girl at a nearby college in '52 & wanted to see their rodeo but Uncle Sam wouldn't let me go that weekend. Hear it is a "don't give a damn "effort because sickbay is heaven to the inmates....

No sir, alot's changed since. A few more have been built in that area I believe. I think Ellis and Estelle are two of the new ones. The one my friend is in is the original hunstville. I doubt that place is "heaven" to the inmates though. My friend was somewhat decent when I knew him back in my teenage years. These last few times I've gone up there to see him, it's like he's changed. It's like prison has turned him into some kind of, animal, or something. Hopefully he's behaving himself so he can just come home to his wife and two sons and start all over. They're good boys, they don't deserve a fatherless childhood. But at the same time, prison is a breeding ground for violence, and if his temper is still the same as it was prior to his incarceration, well, I just hope he's calmed down. I guess that's all I have to say about that.

Well I don't know about that man, I mean, when your a little boy and you misbehave, who usually kicks your butt and puts you in line ? Dad. It's been proven, when you grow up w/o a dad, you don't have anyone to set you straight and as a result you get into more trouble than a guy whose dad was around to put him in line. My friend didn't have a dad growing up, look how he turned out. A few of my old friends didn't grow up with their dads and they're well on their way to ending up in a cell next to my friend up in the joint. My mom, a former parole officer (yes I know, ironic huh ?) told me that most of the guys she dealt with never knew their dads. Their mom is doing a decent job of raising them, but some things you need a dad for. There's no dad around so they aren't going to have the nice normal childhoods kids with two parents have.
