I thought it was pretty good. I don't think it was Oscar-winning good, but I found it entertaining, overall. Anyone else see it yet?

I was really disappointed. The plot/script was a mess, and Chris Cooper was really underutilized. The action scenes were fun, though.

Gabe Newell - I agree with you comments about Chris Cooper. He looked generally embarrassed for most of the movie. The film itself wasn't that bad but overall pretty forgettable.

I thought it was pretty good. Not all time top ten good but I'm glad I saw it on the big screen.

I thought it was brilliant.

It showed how divided Saudi culture is. What a complicated place!

This was best illustrated (at least cinematographically) by the confrontation between three different groups each wearing different uniforms in that scene where Jamie Fox punches out the guy in blue and also by the good cops and corrupt cops.

Showed how arrogant and aggressive Americans can be toward other cultures. Also showed how people can learn to understand each other and develop loyal friendships with some contact over time which, I think, is something we desperately need to do more.

Also showed how we are potent and alright, after all, once we understand what's going on around us (like when Chris Cooper got everybody digging in the giant puddle).

It just barely touched upon the existence of the "Spiritual Mercenary" culture that has existed for a long, long time in Arabia and in Central Asia (like Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, etc.) I would have really like to have seen more discussion about that as it's something that I don't think Americans typically understand.

They should have had subtitles for the talk in Arabic. Toward the end they were trying to tape executing the FBI agent because he had Israel in his passport, not because he was an American. Easy to miss if you don't speak Arabic (my wife translated for me).

I thought it was brilliant.
<snip> What a complicated place! <snip>

Understanding that it is a complicated place puts you ahead of most of the folks in the U.S. when dealing with the Middle East. There are ways of thinking over there that are simply beyond the comprehension of many westerners. It is a very, very different part of the world.

Cheers
