Hey everyone..

First time posting in the WSS forums.. shout out to all my RAT and Spyderco bros over here!

I've decided to start my own PSK, and to gear up in general for whatever the outdoors throws at me.

I ordered and recieved the AMK Pocket survival pak and I must say I'm really impressed with how much useful stuff is in this small package. I'd assume that a few of you guys around here might have one. My question is..

aside from whats already in the pak.. what do you guys who have one add to it? I'm thinking some Water purification tablets would be good (maybe a couple kat. MP1s), or some matches (even though it has the tinder quick, spark lighter and I'll most likely have my newly acquired LMF Scout with me). I'm probably going to try to put a small knife in there. For now, my BM Benchmite2 since it's one of my smaller knives and I dont use it at all for anything else. Maybe in the future I'll buy a Spyderco Ladybug or Dfly in there.

What do yall think about the Pak and what too add or take out of it? Also.. as I said, I'm starting up my outdoor/survival gear cache so I'm open to suggestions for essentials that you guys might have. (I'm set for knives, fire starting and will be soon set for water purifying. I have a 32oz Nalgene bottle and am about to get one of those screw on filters, as well as the kat. MP1 tablets). Also ordered an AMK light and fast trail medical kit with the pak. I like it a lot too (any suggestions on what to add to that are welcome too)

Thanks yall.

Welcome to the W&SS section 'Ol Bud. Just look around & do some reading...there is alot of knowledge floating around in here. I must warn you:D Once you get into this stuff your wallet will shrink ! As for your kit...what about some type of quick shelter ? poncho, space blanket, small tarp ? Also you'll want some 550 cord & some jute twine  You should also have several different methods of making fire ;)

Hey coaldigger.. good to see ya.

My whole PSK (once complete) will go in my truck toolbox with my tent, sleeping bag, tarp, and camp chair already are. Also have a lot of 550 paracord, bug spray and a BIC lighter too. (just to give you guys more info on where its gunna go).

I was just looking at some more small knife options for the PSP. Looking at a Byrd Robin, or maybe a vic SAK of some type. The classic would fit really well obviously, (but I'd like a bigger blade plus a saw) and I already EDC a Fieldmaster, but I think it would be way to big to go in the pak. Might also look at oone of the new smaller buckites.

I just bought an AMK heatsheets survival blanket at the Dicks sporting goods I work at and its pretty sweet. Could work for a shelter If I needed it. I might buy another so I have one for a blanket, and one for a shelter. Also gunna get a Poncho. Might work out for shelter too.

Anyone reccomend a good wire saw? that might fit nicely in the pak. I'm also looking for a good but not too expensive camp or pack Axe (I know it wont fit in the pak.. but I still need one. Anyone used the Buck camp axe? I like the grip on that one over the Gerber axes. I can find one of those for around 26 bucks)

I'm pretty set on flashlights, but I might pick up a cheap mini maglite to stay in my truck (usually have a Surefire L4 in my pocket), And I'm gunna get a good Headlamp soon.

If you cant tell Coal.. I know how this is already affecting my wallet. haha.. cheaper than guns and gun accesories though!

For a Small axe for your pack I'de try the Wetterlings 13" Wilderness model  or the Gerber back Paxe model. I have the wetterlings & my Bro. has the Gerber. The Gerber's are made by Fiskars & are great for the money. I have the Gerber Sportaxe & I like it also..it stays on my ATV.

Personally, I'd ditch the bag, and use a slightly larger Aloksak or ziplock. To what's there I'd add:

RAT firekit (put the compass in the top of the kit if you have an old one)
AMK HeatSheet (said you already got one)
SAK (preferrably one of the longer ones like the Rucksack, Outrider or Trekker, for the longer saw.

Thanks so far guys.. Come on folks! I know theres more people who want to chime in here :)

P.S.- Anyone know of a sturdy light weight folding shovel?

REI or Gander Mtn sell the folding shovels. I have also seen them at Target or Walmart. I bought a cheap one for car camping many years ago and it still works well.

As impressed as I am with the original pack.
I ditched the tinder sparker compass.
and replaced those with a tampon, lipbalm, BCB striker flint, a Silva SERE luminous compass.
I addded
A Swisslite card, a Gerber micro LST, a postage stamp sized diamond sharpening plate, Inova mini led. Pencil sharpener, Micropur water steriliseation tabs. Eventualy the heavy plastic bag started to give so I have put it into a hard plastic water proof box that still goes in my pocket.
Tampons are sterile they can be used to clean wounds or dress them, as final filter in an improvised water filter. and used with a small amount of tape to cover a blister, smeared with lipbalm the will catch a spark and I have had a full tampon with lipbalm burn for five and a half minutes.
Pencil sharpener makes nearly perfect tinder from any dry twigs ( or even pencils)
Lipbalm protects our lips, fire accelerent will make a tempory waterproofer.

Sorry for the size of the pic and I notice it is a bit old because it stil has the sparklite not the BCB flint.
