My BK-7 just arrived in the mail today. It looks and feels very solid, and it's shaving sharp. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some tips on maintaining the blade. I am planning on using it for outdoor usage, so it will probably see a fair share of moisture. Thanks for any tips.

It would be a shame if you didn't use and abuse that knife outside. That knife is not made for idle work. No special care needed, just wipe it dry if it gets wet, don't store it in a wet sheath and keep wacking away. Great knife you will enjoy it:thumbup:

Really? I thought I read somewhere that it needs to be oiled a lot because it is very prone to rusting. That would be great if I heard incorrectly...

it doesnt rust to bad , you kinda have to neglect it for some time for that to happen. ive got one and love it . just a light coat of any good gun oil if your going to put it up for a while and try not to leave any tree/plant matter on the edge for prolonged periods of time. just be sure and use the crap out of it . from time to time you may start to see a slight patina on the edge and its nothing to worry about it just means you havent used it enough!

Just for sharpening purposes, does anyone know what angle the edge is when it is fresh from the factory?

I wouldn't do anything out of the ordinary if I were you. Like any other quality knife, keep the blade sharp and don't wait for it to get dull. I wouldn't worry about rust on the epoxy-coated sections of the knife, unless you manage to scratch some of the finish off. Otherwise, use something like Birchwood-Casey Sheath, some Militec-1 or just some good old BreakFree (sparingly.)

Like any other knife, if you're gonna be getting it wet (especially in salty water,) wash it and dry it thoroughly and use one of the above to prevent rust. Long-term storage? Apply a thin film of any good gun grease to the edge. I hope this helps

I've got a BK9, and the two knives are very simalur. I've never had any rust problems with or any of the other knives in the same steel (between me and three friends we have two Bk9's the becker necker, the brute and the companion, all of which have no rust on them, the oldest of which being around 2 or three years old now...

I'm often in a humid environment and my Necker did show a little bit of rust on the edge. I removed it immediately with 0000 and a touch of Flitz.

Since then, I wipe it every couple of weeks with a Tuf Cloth and since then no rust whatsoever.

BTW I use Tuf Cloth often and I really think it's a great product. I've tried pretty much all the rust inhibitors (Militec, Breakfree CLP, mineral oil, etc - the usual crowd) on various steels and I do like Tuf Cloth/Tuf Glide the best overall.

I have a BK9, when I am through chopping,I just drag the blade through a small cake of beeswax, that seals the edge against moisture. I also clean my blade off with softsoap & an old toothbrush,& rinse in hot water ,all of the tree saps & other dirt comes right off . dry it good & use the wax !! Three years & it still looks pretty new !
