Just got my 730 from 1Stop. Great price and service!
Really like the knife. Seems well finished and the Axis lock is smooth as silk. I soon realized that the AXIS lock lever is used only to close the knife... DUH!

I was wondering how to decrease the tension on the blade so that it can be flicked open? Is that not a good idea?

All-in-all it seems like a good all around knife that is not too menacing and will be great for self defence in a pinch.

What would you guys suggest as the best all-around lube/protectant to use? Sentry TUFF-GLIDE OK?

Bennett, you really do not need any additional protection because your blade is protected with black teflon coating (SBT version). It protects the steel against corrosion even being scratched, although looks somewhat ugly in this case. Use a drop or lubricant in pivot area and this is all your knife needs. MILITEC Weapon Grade Synthetic Based Metal Conditioner works greatly for this purpose.

As to blade "flipping" - I think it is not a good idea, especially if you are going to loosen pivot tension for this purpose. Two reasons:
1. Ares is designed for tip-up carry and the artery in your groin is fairly close to your pants side pocket. Knife with loosened pivot can open in your pocket unintentionally (f. ex. as result of your violent movement) and make you harm being drawn.
2. Flipping knife open you are doing practically uncontrolled violent movement with razor-sharp blade, especially dangerous in tight areas. Maybe it looks macho but it is very unreliable opening method, I would not rely on it in high stress situation and I do not see any reasons to do it daily.

So my advice would be - retain your Ares in condition it was designed for and it will serve you flawlessly for a long time.

to remove tension on the blade to expedite flipping, simply pull down on the axis lock while you are flipping.

Just got mine too, same model, and I am very impressed with overall fit and finish as well as the velvet smooth action. While not quite hair-poppin' as it came, a couple of strokes on the 204 put it there.Note to Benchmade: how about an axis lock, slim in profile, with about a 2-2 1/2" blade as an everyday carry gents knife?Anyhow, the 730SBT has instantly become my favorite folder, and may keep the title for quite a while!

Concerning loosening the pivot screw where the blade can be flicked open, (and please correct me if I'm mistaken) a LEO would consider this a "gravity" knife...illegal in many areas.

204...Spyderco Sharpmaker MODEL: 204. It is a sharpening system made by Spydie; probably the most popular around. Price: ~$45 to ~$55.

In general, a 'gravity knife' refers to an 'out the front'-type design. It varies from state-to-state, and usually depends on case law, not the statutes. The best defense to this knife being a gravity knife is that any properly-made one hand knife can be flicked open. The Axis mechanism only makes it slightly easier, and that means that less force will be used, so the knife will be more under control, which is safer. Of course, flicking the blade open in front of an LEO is not a good idea, just by merit of making you 'seem' more criminal. Search in the 'blade discussion' and 'review' forums for my more detailed instructions on how to make the knife open only by flicking, not by gravity.
