I just received my Brend Hatchet. I am 100% pleased with it. Out of the box it was shaving sharp. The sheath from London Bridge Trading Co. is of good quality and should hold up well. IMO, it's the best $95.00 I have spent in a long time! BTW, I plan on carrying it while walking in the woods. Does anyone have any experience carrying the Brend in a kydex sheath. I thought that I would store it in the LB sheath and carry it in a kydex one. Any thoughts on this idea?
BTW, the Brend is one BAD ASS looking hatchet. I know that I would thank twice before screwing with anyone carrying one on their hip!! Also, where can I buy an ATC t-shirt?
Andy, thanks for making such a great product at such a fair price!

Yes, I have carried the Brend in a kydex sheath. I have just returned to the USS Tarawa after spending a few months on shore.
I might as well post my review of the Brend now since someone you ask:

The Brend Fighting Hatchet is simple tool. It can cut, puncture, and pry as well as any hatchet or axe I have used. (I have yet to use a Next Gen tomahawk, however.) I originally received the hatchet dull and a little misformed due to the laser cutting on the first production run. Using a grinding wheel, I rounded off the pointed edges, and rounded off the pommel so it would not stick me. I sharpened up the edge of the hatchet to shaving sharp and modified the bottom of the hatchet so it could be used as a hooking edge.

I carried the hatchet in a modified kydex sheath made by Survival Sheaths. I had it in the under arm carry mode, however, this was way too hard to access due to all the gear we carry and wear. Using a web belt, I made a baldric type sheath instead. I just threw this on over the top of all of my gear and it worked perfect. It is an excellent mode of transperation and easily accessable.

The blade performed better than I could have imagined. Everywhere I went, the blade went with me and and did everything I needed. I punched holes in tires, ammo cans, and boards with no problems. (The tires on the jeep tires took about 4 good strikes to puncture).
I used the hatchet edge to break locks (quite a few took more than one good crack!)

Overall, I could have asked for no better tool to carry while I was in Iraq. The hatchet, used with a multitool, took care of every knife need I had. I didn't even bring a fixed blade on this deployment.

If you need any more help let me know. I have only ever carried two types of blades: Busse and American Tomahawk. Back when Mr. Prisco sold Busse, I bought my first and I just followed Mr. Prisco over to ATC. I just commisioned a custom hatchet/lance from ATC and Mr. Gingrich is currently working on it. ATC backs, not only their products, but their customers too. I am a loyal user and fan.

Thanks for the info Sgt. Horsley. I am glad to see that your Brend held up so well under hard use in Iraq. BTW, I spent some time on the USS Tarawa in 1983. I was one of those crazy LVTP-7 crewmen. It was really a blast to drive an Amtrack on and off her. The Tarawa is one fine ship. THANK YOU FOR THE OUTSTANDING JOB YOU AND ALL THE OTHER MARINES DID IN IRAQ! I AN SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN AND A FORMER MARINE BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU. GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND GOD BLESS THE USMC. SEMPER FI.

That was a kick ass review!...

Glad you made it ....(not that there was any doubt anyone on this forum would) ..Sounds like you whacked the Brend seriously....what did it take to sharpen it up again....what would you like to change, though it seems like the folks at ATC made the same changes you did.....on the Survival Sheathes website, they had something for the VN 'hawk, but not the Brend.....
Thanks Jess,
Well done, Well Done

the edge actually could use a good sharpening now! ;)

I used a basic diamond rod. It was pretty course (don't know the make or model, it was a last minute gift).
A few passes over the edge and it was sharp enough. After whacking the lock off of one building, I had two really good dents in the edge (the edge didn't fold, but dented in. Probably due to the RC or type of steel). For fixing this, I just used my Leatherman Wave file and filed down the edge to get out the dents.

Hope that explains it.
