Thanks very much to everyone that gave advice, recommended Buck in general, and the Model 298GY in particular!
I ordered the knife on Sunday, it arrived in the mail today as described.
I'm really blown away by this knife. Over the last 20 years, American made products that I've considered superior to their alternatives have been few and far between in my experience. I hadn't considered Buck to be a manufacturer of real quality products. I was very much mistaken.
I liked the look of the Sirus line and chose the Model 298GY specifically because it used 154cm steel (or ATS-34, I think they're the same thing?). I have that steel in another Benchmade knife and I've been very happy with it.

This thing has some real heft at 3.9 oz.
Length Closed: 4 1/2" (11.4 cm)
Blade Length: 3 1/4" (8.3 cm)
The heat treating is done by Paul Bos.

The blade is thick and solid. The parts of the mechanism that move all feel very substantial, with no excess play in them. Even the lock to prevent accidental opening feels quite secure. This is definitely not a 2nd-rate knife.
If you haven't ever considered a Buck or long ago wrote them off, I recommend giving them a chance. This is a knife I expect to last for many years, and give to my son one day.
Thanks again guys!
Chris
