Thanks very much to everyone that gave advice, recommended Buck in general, and the Model 298GY in particular!

I ordered the knife on Sunday, it arrived in the mail today as described.

I'm really blown away by this knife. Over the last 20 years, American made products that I've considered superior to their alternatives have been few and far between in my experience. I hadn't considered Buck to be a manufacturer of real quality products. I was very much mistaken.

I liked the look of the Sirus line and chose the Model 298GY specifically because it used 154cm steel (or ATS-34, I think they're the same thing?). I have that steel in another Benchmade knife and I've been very happy with it.

This thing has some real heft at 3.9 oz.
Length Closed: 4 1/2" (11.4 cm)
Blade Length: 3 1/4" (8.3 cm)
The heat treating is done by Paul Bos.

The blade is thick and solid. The parts of the mechanism that move all feel very substantial, with no excess play in them. Even the lock to prevent accidental opening feels quite secure. This is definitely not a 2nd-rate knife.

If you haven't ever considered a Buck or long ago wrote them off, I recommend giving them a chance. This is a knife I expect to last for many years, and give to my son one day.

Thanks again guys!

Chris

Many of us have purchased one of these because of recommendations!
They are great! Thanks for the review!
Don't forget your son can give it to his son :D

Goshen...
Get one.
Mike recommended it for me.
Got one from Larry.
Got a second one from Larry (wanted to be certain I had a spare in case the first one walked away).
I can't think of anything I would change on the knife.
Flat out love it.

Chris...
Great to hear you are happy with it.
Too cool for school isn't it?

I have been looking at the 2007 catalog - page 7 - Sirus, and I don't see a 298 listed. Only 297's. Am I missing something? You have tweaked my interest in buying one, but??????

...I'm glad gooser has said all he has about the 298 because there just aren't words for me to tell ya how much I love that thing...It's taken on the position of my MAIN daily EDC...I never leave home without it...

I bought my Sirus strictly on the basis of the really kool  skull design just for fun. Man was I ever surprised! :D I love this knife. :D The LEAP is as fast as any automatic and its construction is solid.  The Sirus feels really strong in my hand and I love the drop point shape. :) Cant beat it for $50!;)

The Buck Sirus is a great knife. My only complaint is that the handle is a little smooth and sometimes slick. Anyone know any coatings, or something to help this?

I have the same model shipped yesterday (no tracking #, usps). I can't wait. Good review.
Seems to reaffirm my choice. I also have a SOG Twitch XL w/Black TiNi coming (shipped today). I will do a side by side comparison/review w/Pics.

New to the forum but not new to knives. This is a great place to learn from as I build up my collection.

Darryl,,,I roamed into a BPro today and there were no sirus. But looked like a 291 GY laying there.. Is that the Tempest?....

sorry,,,I should have looked it up myself...but it was around 65 bucks. I should have played with it but we were a bit stressed for time.

...The 290 or 291 is the Rush...I think the Tempest is a 296 Larry...They make a 296 GY just like the Sirus in ATS-34 or 154CM...Same knife just "skeletonized"...I just picked up a Sirus B297 DP which is also exactly like the 298 but it's in 420HC. Couldn't pass it up for $11.20 NIB...LOL...
