I JUST got my new Commander. Awsome ergonomics, very fast. When examining it I notice 2 things.
1. the blade tip is not centered between the liners when the knife is closed and sometimes when opening the knife I hear a scraping sound.
2. I can see the end of one of the small phillips-head screws just protruding beyond the liner.

Has anyone else experienced this with a new Commander? If so, what did you do? What should I do?

Thanks guys.

Ben

I purchased a '99 Commander over a year ago and had the same problem. The obverse (left) side of the blade would scrape against the adjacent liner, particularly when the knife was opened with the left hand. I found that the problem was caused by an overly loose pivot pin, and after tightening the pin, the blade became centered between the liners and no longer scraped. Tighten the pivot pin on your knife until you see the blade become centered between the liners while closed (or at least until it is no longer touching the obverse liner). If the blade tension is too tight for you, add some silicon based lubricant to the pivot area to improve the action. If this doesn't do it, contact Emerson, Inc. They are a pleasure to deal with and will make sure the knife gets fixed.

This is not uncommon in folding knives and should not be a problem so long as the screw doesn't actually contact the blade on the inside of the knife. If it really bugs you,
remove the screw and take a silicon carbide grinding wheel (like the ones on the Dremel tool) and grind the screw down a bit until it will sit flush with the inside of the liner.

I hope this is helpful!

I had the same problem. I posted my query.

I was advised 2 ways;
1-Send back to Emerson for pivot pin alignment.

2-Loosen pivot pin and push knife (in fully open position) towards the side that scrapes.

I believe the 1st to be the most sane,

however I did the 2nd and it worked perfectly.

It also helped to keep the pivot pin a little tight. This hasn't effected the speed of deployment.

Good luck

Sent it back to Emerson and they had it back to me in perfect condition in just a couple of days!
Diane was SUPER nice... Can't say enough about their service...
Superb!
With people like this to deal with I'd buy another Emerson in a heartbeat!
