It is a little long but worth the read, goes to show you what you get for following the law, i would have been better off sticking it in my boot or just leaving it in its box in the bag(which the clerk told me NOT TO DO as it was illegal to carry a concealed weapon)
I just went to pick up my Cold Steel SRK about a hour ago. And let me tell you it was an experiance. First off I live in canada where it is illegal to carry any knife concealed, even a 1" sak would be illegal to carry concealed if you were ANAL about the law, granted most cops wouldnt give a crap about a 1-4" folder but I thought if they did stop me for some reason or another they might not like me walking around with a 6" Fixed blade knife concealed. So when I picked it up I was talking to the guy at the counter and took his advice of just sticking it in the Sheath and cliping it to my belt. There is no Sixe limit on knives in canada so it would be no problem if it wasnt concealed right? wrong. As i Was walking from the store(in the mall) to the food court in the mall I noticed that a Security guard was fallowing me about 20 feet back. I made a few turns and he kept following me. Being a lawful citizen I turned around and he stoped and looked at me for a min, i waled up to him and asked if i could help him with anything. He asked me what was in the sheath and why i was carrying it, I told him it was a CS SRK and that i had just purchased it and didnt want to break any laws carrying it home so i was carrying it in a highly Visable location. He then asked me to come with him to some kinda office(im assuming it was the office for the security people) and asked to see the knife, I pulled it out fliped it around and handed it to him handle first. His first words were it Doesnt look like a Survival Rescue knife, it looks like a weapon. I then explained to him that with its 6" blade it was a good 1-2" shorter than your average Fighting knife, that with its 3/16" thikness and edge geometry it wasnt really as well designed for slashing(at fleshy target) strokes. As it was ment to be a good all around highly useful/durable knife. He then told me to wait there while he went to call the police to verify the laws on carrying a knife(was kinda scary that a security guard DID NOT KNOW them already). Anyways 5-10 min later he came back and told me that I was right about the law but that in the mall they did not allow any weapons(funny seeing as the knife store where i got my knife sells all kinds of swords/knifes/throwing weapons) So i asked him how one would go about purchasing something from this store without walking through the mall with a "Weapon". He then proceeded to give me a mean look and in a strained tone of voice asked me not so politly to leave ASAP and that he would escort me to the door. I told him I would leave and he could walk with me but that I had one more quick stop to make, he agreed. So on the way out i stopped in where i bought the knife and talked to the person I talked to before. I told this person that the security guard, that was standing about 8" away from me and could hear anyhting i said, Was harrasing me and that If this was the kind of treatment i was going to get after purchasing a knife from their store that I would have to Write a letter complaining both to the store manager as well as the security firm the mall used. And that I would like a full refund(note that they brought the knife in special order for me and made me pay in advance, So giving me my money back would be a big hassel) The cleck went to get the store manager that was on his lunch break at te time. When he arrived he asked the securitty guard to step into his office, the security guard refused saying he had to escort me out of the building as i had a "Weapon" on me. The manager said he would walk with us and talk to the guard after i had left the building, and if after tommorow i still wanted a refund he would drive to my house after work and give me a full refund as well as a In store credit for $50 for the hassel. So as we walked to the door no one said anything, when we arrived i told the manager that i would think about it and call him later to let him know if i still wanted the refund. As i got about 30 feet away i herd the manager just totaly lose it on the security guard. From what i could hear, founbd out after i called the manage later the security guard was on his first day and was still in training. I told him that i didnt really want a refund and that i had said that just to scare the security guard, he said that he understands that I was detained and questioned and that he was sorry and was going to complain to the security firms manager, he also gave me a $50 in store credit and if i used it on a knife he offered to deliver it to my home
So all in all my first knife purchase wasnt the smoothest transaction i have ever went through. Look what i got for following the law, the first thing i do is going to be apply for a permit to carry a concealed weapon(knife)
