Just got my first Busse. Not crazy about the sheath

I sold part of my collection to get the money to buy the Combat Basic 7. I got it to replace the CS Recon Scout and Bushranger that I use for hiking/camping. The Busse just arrived today. I love the knife and can't wait to take it camping next week. I am not too happy with the sheath. Mine is the type that is nylon with the kydex insert. The knife's fit seems too tight. If not angled properly, it won't go in that last 1/2 inch. I need to focus and put extra effort to get it to slide in the sheath all the way. I would like to replace it with an all kydex version. I did see one thread here about one custom sheath maker. Can anyone recommend other sources to try for different sheath options? Thanks.

Rob,
Go back about 45 to 90 days on the forum and you will find many sheath makers that use Kydex.

If you like kydex, you can try out On/Scene Tactical. Eric does very nice work, For leather, try out Kenny Rowe.

I've got two Kenny Rowe leather sheaths for my Busses, and they are excellent. If you prefer concealex/kydex, On Scene Tactical, which is our own Normark, is absolutely first rate. Check it out

It's negative comments regarding this sheath that has made me hesitate from buying a Busse BM-E. That may seem silly because the sheath is just an accessory and easily replaced but if you know you'll need to spend an extra $40 to get what you want from an already pricey knife...
Maybe Busse should consider offering an all kydex sheath despite the fact that the kydex lined sheath is relatively new. I sent an email about this and haven't heard back yet.

I heard that an all-kydex sheathe will be an option on the Combat Grade models. I looked at a few at Blade, and they looked really nice. I'm not sure when they'll start to be made an option, and I can't gauruntee they will, but I was told that.

Hey AF...

Don't hold back from getting a BM just because of the sheath..

You'll be missing out on one Hell of a knife...It is Truely a thing of Beauty and Unsurpassed proformance...

The sheath you buy for your knife will only make you enjoy and use the knife that much more.

The sting shall pass and you won't regret the purchase...

As far as sheath options go hang tight and watch out!

I must agree the sheath is not ideal. Still, one does the best one can with what one has. The sheath for my straight handled Steelheart II works OK; the knife is not super tight in the insert. In fact, I can flip it for left or right hand use. I keep fire starting and sharpening materials in the pocket.

Another Busse forumite tipped me off to putting the sheath under my belt, and using the pocket's strap as a "belt loop" to keep the sheath in place. I certainly did not want a knife that large dangling below my belt.

My straight SHII is presently on the left suspender of my web gear (probably a bit large for this kind of carry). I am not 100% confident in its use in the inverted position, but I have a rubber band made from bicycle inner tube holding it around the kydex insert, as well as a paracord tie from the tip to a D-ring just above the knife. Another rubber band can be placed over the handle, if one favors security over fast access. In this position, the belt loop and upper part of the sheath just sort of collapse and are more or less useless.

I have been dithering over kydex for some time. I know there are SEVERAL excellent sources for kydex sheaths.

And, since I ordered the Zero Tolerance 3-knife set, I am REALLY eager to see some ordering info for the online special deal -- kydex sheaths from First Position for all three knives, for $99!

How about it?

Jerry?

Jennifer?

Dave?

Someone?????

Well, I've got to throw my two cents worth in here as well. I've got a BM-E and a NO-E, with a ZT Satin Jack on the way. There hasn't been a weekend so far this year that I haven't been either hiking or backpacking. Since I got it a couple of months ago, my BM is the large knife that I carry. I have put it to good use making shelters, clearing paths, collecting firewood, and a myriad other number of tasks and I absolutely love the knife. However, the sheath does leave something to be desired.

For some reason or another, I have never been able to use tie down holes on a sheath to effectively secure a sheath to my leg. I prefer a drop style kydex sheath that places the handle of the knife in my hand with my arm fully extened down my side. I have several knives with kydex sheaths that have two slots on each side of the sheath so that I can run elastic scuba webbing through them to secure around my leg with fas-tex buckles. To me, that is the perfect way to do it for a large knife.

Now, even better, would be to have a couple of pockets or places to insert a firestarter, multi-tool, and sharpener like I put in the pouch on my current BM sheath. Now, you're cooking with gas. These pockets could be part of the kydex package, or as part of a nylon "shell" around the aforementioned configuration.

I'm not sure why this couldn't be done, and I do understand that no matter what design Jerry picks, somebody out there is going to like something else. But, what would be nice is to have the ability to opt out of the sheath for a credit on the price so you could have your own sheath custom made (as I usually do) and not have one wasted laying in the back of your closet somewhere.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not belly-aching or complaining. I love the Busse products. But, it's just like my Sprinfiled Armory Professional model .45. I'm not going to slip it into some nylon pouch holster from Uncle Mike's. I'm going to have one of the best makers out there (i.e. Rosen or Kramer) set me up with the best customer rig (belt, holster, ammo/light carrier) possible. My Busse Battle Mistress is just like my Pro model Springfield. It's a work of art and deserves the very best in a carry rig. As someone mentioned, these things are already pricey without having to waste dollars on something that won't be used in favor of a custom made sheath.

Just my humble opinion...

Take it easy,

Garrett,

Eric (Normark) at On-Scene Tactical makes a kydex sheath with a NiteIze pouch on the outside that sounds a lot like what you describe. It's an incredibly handy looking addition, along with a FireSteel holder, to my favorite sheath.

From what I could see in the picture of it, it looks like there is a strip of kydex that fits through the belt slot of the pouch and gets held down by the screws attaching the sheath's belt clip.

Eric, if possible, please post the URL to your picture of the sheath/NiteIze combo so the guys can see what my poor description is trying to convey. Also, is that kydex strip that holds the pouch removable via the attaching screws? Or does the strip remain on the sheath even when the pouch is removed?

Many thanks in advance,
Greg

I suggested the same thing- that Busse sell the Combat line without the sheath for a discount. This would be unusual practice for a regular production company, but surely Busse is not regular. (Don't know if they are even considered production- maybe semi-production?) Anyway, it's clear that Busse customers are some of the most demanding. So maybe Busse will accomodate us. I'm eager to find out.

I'm with ya, Garrett.

"...I do understand that no matter what design Jerry picks, somebody out there is going to like something else. But, what would be nice is to have the ability to opt out of the sheath for a credit on the price..."

Right, there is no "standard sheath" that will satisfy everyone. In fact, the sheath and manner of carry is an individual choice. I think that once I do finally make up my mind about the next sheath for my SHII, I'll try modifying the one it came with.

I have a hunch that kydex insert is held with thermal glue, and can be removed with care. It might be fun to add another pocket, install a belt loop midway down, stiffen the upper part, etc.

BTW, I live in the densely forested and brushy (and wet) western part of Washington State. I like to keep the gear I wear above my waist, if possible. I played with a thigh sheath when I was a teenager, but they tend to flop around get caught on brush. I've only recently "discovered" web gear as an alternative to a day pack. For me, the suspenders take most of the load, and the belt rides fairly high.

Ain't it great having indestructible knives AND being able to personalize one's gear?

Welcome to the Forums. Yes, the sheaths leave something to be desired; but they are great knives. Normark has very good sheaths and is a good guy to deal with. Tell Eric I sent you.

Busse also has some new sheaths whicj appear to be very well thought out.

Happy Hunting!

Hey Guys....

One of the problems that face knifemakers is sheaths..
One person wants this, the other that, and yet a third wants some of this, a little of that and none of the other..

It becomes Never ending...
Bogging down the production process.

No matter what you do ,,you can't please everyone all the time...

You would have to have a In House Custom Sheathmaker pulling overtime building sheaths non stop...
It becomes impossible..

Thats one of the reasons I only build a certain type of sheath..
Although once and awhile I will cross that line and build a sheath for a special customer or a specific need that I usually don't do.

Here is a couple that I offer, the ones Rok was talking about.

bussepouch.jpg

The Battle Mistress and Steel Heart..

Both have full blown mini kits built into an American made NiteIze Mini Pockits pouch.Probably one of the Best Accessory pouches on the market today.

Pouch has been modified with a new low profile belt loop and is nicely fitted onto the sheath, with a band all the way around the sheath.

The contents are packed into heavy duty ziplock wallet type pouches.

The only other thing I would modify on this pouch is a larger piece of velcro, or possibly a mini Fastex buckle to torque down the flap.

Other than that it's a pretty decent system and will hold a ton of stuff.

If anyone has questions, suggestions or ideas, Please feel to drop me a note...

Thanks

Eric...

Hi Eric,

Many Thanks for the picture. I have a couple of quick questions on the pouch option:
1. What is the price to add a pouch to one of your sheaths?
2. Could you add both this pouch and a Firesteel holder to the same sheath?

Yours in nuclear sheath options,
Greg
