I received my 9 inch BAS from the 5/22 DOTD today! :D What a great little knife! I watched this little guy for a few days, then when I got back from my Memorial Day camping trip with a bit more money than I had expected and this khuk still hadn't sold, I decided that it was waiting for me. The batteries in my camera are dead so pics will have to wait, but I just wanted to share some first impressions.

First off, I was very surprised that this little thing has a fuller! I didn't expect it on a knife this small, and the pics don't really show it. It's a very nice touch and I love running my fingers across the side of the blade to feel the profile. . . even though I keep getting finger prints on that beautiful shiny finish. :o

Second, even though this is thing is tiny for a khukri, it still has a full 1/4 inch thick spine. I'll have no qualms about using this little knife, and using it hard.

Third, even though I keep on calling it little, that's only in comparison to other khukris. It still has about a 5 1/2 inch blade (it's hard to get an accurate measurement with that curve and re-curve) which is still bigger than most knives I would carry as a primary blade when hiking or camping. That's just the sharpened edge. . . there's still another inch or so of blade when you count the cho and ricasso.

The handle is going to take some getting used to . It's a bit on the short side, but not uncomfortable so far. We'll see what I think after I use it a bit. If I hold it normally my thumb and forefinger creep onto the ricasso a little bit, but it works well with my thumb on the spine. I took it out back to chop at a couple of 1 1/2 to 2 inch diameter sticks and found that it worked rather well in a "three finger" grip with my pinkie finger off the end of the handle and the ring on the handle in between my first and middle fingers. I might try beefing up the handle with a para-cord wrap so that it will fill my hand a bit better.

There's really nothing I can find to complain about on this knife unless I want to be really picky about the fit and finish. I've paid more for knives with worse fit and finish from India. The only modification I need to make is to file down the plate on the end of the handle so that it's flush with the horn. Theres a bit of overhang all the way around and it's kind of sharp and bites into my hand. I'll be making a new leather sheath (it won't be pretty but it'll be functional) and maybe eventually sending it out for a kydex sheath. There's nothing wrong with the sheath that came with it, it's very secure and looks good, but it's not really practical for camping and hiking.

I'll post some pics later this weekend and share some more thoughts on this little beauty after I've used it a bit. :p

Congrats on your recent HIKV infection!

Yup, something in the 12-16 inch range is next on the list. I was attracted to the little 9 inch khukris because it seemed that they would be handy for smaller tasks and would be nice and easy to carry when hiking. With a well designed kydex sheath I would even consider this one suitable for EDC. I do have another khukri. . . an 18 inch chirwa style. . . but it's not an HI and it's pretty poorly made. I want something just a bit smaller and lighter than that to make it a bit easier to carry hiking and camping. It'll probably be a toss up between a Pen Knife and an AK for my next purchase, but I know I'll end up with both eventually, then an M43 for a big tough chopper, and then who knows where I'll go from there! :D
