Hi guys!
I've been lurking around a while and I saw a bunch of forum posts regarding counterfeit PM2s.
I got my first two real 'high end' knives today. One being a Spyderco PM2 in S110V and a tattoo Spyderco Dragonfly. The first thing that struck me was that the box had scotch tape while the one on the genuine dragonfly had a thick clear plastic tape. When I tested some thin paper it went through easily but it wouldn't shave hair where the dragonfly would shave hair no problem! Everything looks pretty legitimate though and high quality so i was just wondering if you guys could help me see if it's real or not since I've never really owned a PM2.
Also, when i rub my thumb over the spider on the blade i can feel the etching. Is that a bad thing?

here are some photos

thanks for all your help guys! nice to know I'm not the only person who has an unhealthy fetish for knives :D

EDIT: Ok guys I contacted the manufacturer and he provided me good proof that it's real :D
Hehe I'm just paranoid after reading all these fake pm2 threads hehehehehehe :jerkin:

It's real, Spyderco doesn't put tape on their boxes. Sellers sometimes do though, and if they were sold by two different sellers, that would explain why there were two different types of tape on the boxes. To my knowledge, the counterfeiters haven't produced any PM2 clones other than with the blade marked S30V. As far as the edge, S110V is difficult to grind steel. The edge on mine was sharp, but not as hair popping sharp as other models with other steels.

The photos are bad, but it doesn't look right to me.

For one thing, the writing on the blade (Spyderco/CPM S110V) should be parallel to the plunge line.

Well, I take it back. It looks like Spyderco changed the writing on that model to it's at an angle.

Looks good to me. I would ask what else besides the scotch tape on the box leads you to believe it's fake. Lots of legit sellers do that.

Heh, it was my first spyderco so i didn't really know what to look for. But it's all cool now, I've been reassured that it's real. Thanks for all the help and feedback guys:D

You didn't say where you bought it. They have been very hard to find since they first came out, if you found a seller with a lot of them then that might be suspicious.

Yeah there's a few big red flags:

-- More stock than they should have
-- Ships from China or somewhere overseas
-- Low feedback seller

Trying to pass one off as legit here in the USA is fraud and the seller could see jail time.

-No little indent on the bottom of blade
-hardware looks correct
-lanyard hole looks correct with correct chamfering

That's just from the first photo I can tell it's real.

More over.

-clip is correctly shiny and spyderco logo is not too high on the clip
-two skeletonized holes (some fakes do do that correctly but just saying)
-compression lock area is rounded on the scale

I have watched so so many videos on fakes. This is real.

In person I would, if I were you, look at the skeletonized portions beneath the scales. Does it look like up and down lines from the milling in the cut outs? If so, combined with the rest, it's definitely real. With the fakes, the skeletonized cut outs look all scratchy.

S110V is not your average steel. If you have any experience with high vanadium steel this knife will let you know right away if it is really S110V or not. When it hits the stones you will know. If it is a fake they certainly did not use anything even close to S110V.

There's something I don't understand about these fake spydercos. Is the lock up and smoothness of operation good enough on these that it's not easy to tell its a fake? Seems to me that would be a dead give away. I can't see a $30 knockoff being anywhere close to the real thing.

My paramilitary was smooth at first then got gritty and tight within a few days and a week later smooth as butter and has gotten better with age. I think I bought it 6 to 8 months ago.

So I would say that isn't always a clear way to tell.

I think a lot of times people are buying them for the low price sight unseen then wonder why they got duped by the fake. People that understand quality know you get what you pay for. Low price and shipped from China are a dead giveaway for a fake. It's all a giant headache with these fakes

Unless you're a real pro with experience on these it's close to impossible to identify some fakes, especially from web photos, especially when they might just not match...

I wouldn't dream of buying a S30V Para 2 or a Dragonfly 2 unless it's from a reputed vendor or a friend I've known for years... they are probably the most faked knives in the world (I'm not counting saks as those fakes are generally very easy to spot).
