I just got a Victorinox DAK. A surplus store had 5 DAKs for about 12 dollars each. Everryones was pre-owned and most of them was in a terrible condition. But this one was just incredible dirty, filled with german gunk and the blade was dull. But I bought it and cleaned it and it turned out ok. The blade got supersharp after 20 minutes on the Sharpmaker. Now everything is in a very good condition (the snape is still very strong) except for scratches on the blade.
This one must be pre-1985 since it lacks the file on the saw. A great EDC!

Congratz on that nice GAK. I´ve owned several in the past and some were given away some might swirr around somewhere in the office, workshop or whatever. I had newer version (with file) while I was in the German Army (Bundeswehr). Once I´ve owned one made by Robert Klaas, Solingen. The Klaas one´s made are really worth owning/collecting. They seem to get pretty rare.

But the Vic steel is a little better in sharping and edge retention.

BTW: What do you mean with "german gunk" ;) ;) (just kidding)

(Just for information - the new version of the GAK is also made by Vic, but has a one-hand-opening blade. and partial serrations - not quiet useful for EDC tasks...)

Well.. since the mighty GAK was given to german soldiers I asumed that the dirt/gunk in/on it must be authentic german dirt. Cheers!!!

Well... Yes and No... ;) it might be dirt/gunk from Germany. But soldiers had to give their knives back after leaving the army. Some where given to other soldiers (the better knives) and the other ones were sold to army-stores - as far as I know.

I have o e I picked up in the early 80s mad by Victorinox but some where I lost the cover for the saw.
