Well,

This is a slick little knife. After playing with it for a couple hours, I attached it to my keyring along with my ARC-AAA and I do believe I am all set!

I am looking at getting a Leek next, or perhaps a Scallion w/ green aluminum scales....Hmmmmmmmm.

Apparently my local shop here has a "very limited" Leek version in stock, called the "Black Gold" Leek. It is supposedly black "powder coated" w/ actual gold plated thumbstuds and some other gold decorations. Sounds nice, doesn't it? I'm going to look at it tomorrow, reportedly a special run made just for their distributor.

congrats on your new Chive! i own both the combo-edge and the plain-edge Leek, as part of my EDC. they're great. my wife's got the Chive, and she likes it, despite how infrequently she actually uses it. and, oddly enough, the very Scallion you speak of was my birthday gift to my stepdad. he LOVES it. uses it everyday at work, and the green scales still look terrific.

as far as the "Black Gold" Leek goes, i'd pass on it. if you're going to "collect" it (ie: it becomes a safe queen), it might be a nice choice, but i have found most special coatings on blades do not last long. nor do they look very nice once they develop scratches.

i recommend the stainless steel Leek as your next choice. it's just as fast as the chive, only you can actually use the thumb studs! (i find those on the Chive to be impractical, other than as a positive stop for the blade.) the length is also very nice, and even with large hands, i find it to be "just the right size." very slim, very light, and sits pretty deep in the pocket. sharp as all get out straight from the box, too.

good luck on your future Speed Safe purchase, whichever you get!

Thanks for your feedback, Abe.

I tend to agree with you about the "Black gold" Leek...It will be interesting to have a look (ogle) at, but at about twice the price of the standard Leek in S/S (which I really like) it doesn't make a lot of sense for me. I am a daily user of all of my knives, so I definitely wouldn't just put it away and not use this one.

Considering the price difference in particular, I realize that I would be far more likely to buy the standard Leek, then also a Scallion and have money left over for a beer and burger; than to invest in the black/gold version.

It seems to me that the s/s Leek will possibly be the "food knife" that I have been looking for, to be used for cutting up my lunch items ie: apple, orange, sandwich at work (or at home) whilst preserving my other EDC (AFCK, BM710, Spydie Police, etc...) for "other" uses. It seems that this knife in 440A steel will be about perfect for that purpose.

Thanks again for your response, Jeff/1911.

Sounds good! I like them both, I give the leek a little better score, it fits me better. Glad you are happy! Paul

i agree. i don't use my Leek for any really "heavy" cutting tasks, but don't be afraid to use it for more than apples and such. the steel seems to be "treated" very well, and it holds its edge very nicely for medium tasks. either way, get those "Onions", and have fun!

I still haven't made it to the knife shop I mentioned, perhaps on the weekend.

I'll let you know what I find.
