Hey all. Just got my new 17 and it is SWEET!!! I'm not a huge fan of the coating though so I will be stripping it with citristrip tomorrow. My question is whether or not this will affect the etching. If so, how can I protect it. Thanks in advance.

You can etch it a little deeper with some PCB acid. I've never done it before but some people here have, I'd ask them instead...Alternately, you can just strip it and see what happens, I stripped my 16, sanded the bevels a little and forced a patina with vinegar and even now the logos are still there.

Thanks CamH....just so they are even a bit visible, I'm happy. I wanna take the coating off though because the lady and I are going out to a state park we've never been to and I wanna test her out.

pcb will work to help with the etching. I've stripped blades with etched marks on them though and they still show just fine. I don't think you'll have an issue.

No! PCB needs to go on before you strip the blade. The coating acts as a resist layer to the etchant. Also, tape up your exposed edge with some masking tape before you start.

Apply it for about an hour (or until it looks like the etchant is saturated with metal). Rinse and repeat as desired. 2-3 applications should give you a nice deep etch that won't go away. You can neutralize the etchant with Windex. I know, I didn't believe it either, but it works. When you've done all you want to do, rinse with water, spray it with Windex and scrub the area with an old toothbrush / sponge. Rinse clean and then you can get to work on stripping the blade.

Here are a few pics

Psyop, that looks like a really nice etch. Would you say the depth is comparable to that of the stamp? How does the detail hold up?

The detail has held up great. It isnt as deep as the old roll stamp but its very clear.

What did you use to etch? I'm guessing the factory coating keeps it from etching anything but the lettering?

Ah ok. Thanks. The windex part makes sense since the etching is done with an acidic solution. Windex is a basic solution since it contains ammonia.

I've stripped my 2 and 9, but they were the older stamped versions. My 4 and 17 have the newer laser etchings on them. I'm going to give it a shot when I strip the 17 now. Just have to pick up some etching solution from radio shack.
