Just got my rc-4 in the mail from KSF.com (only ordered it wednesday) and it is one of the most beautiful things iv'e ever seen, in a bet your life, serious tool way, of course. Just wanted to say thanks to Mr. Bohn and the Rat Cutlery dudes for so much badassery.

I did have a question about the powder coating tho. Last night a buddy and I were trying to remove the head of a several day old dead raccoon and, needless to say, i got some very stinky goo all over my Izula. I have since washed it several times in hot soapy water and even sprayed some bleach based cleaner on it but the stink will not go completely away. I don't have a problem stripping the coating and "doing" a patina but i was curious if anybody has had a similar experience ir if i'm just not scrubbing hard enough.

Thanks for any input!

Boil it in alcohol?

I don't know man, never chopped up an old racoon carcass with a RAT before.

Lol... why did you cut up a dead raccoon with your new knife? Have you taken of the scales and washed underneath etc?

Try some baking soda. It is great for removing odors on all kinds of stuff. Just mix it with enough water to make a paste then rub the Izula with the paste and let dry. Wash off the paste. Let us know if it works.

Could try Simple Green as well.

Lesson learned today... Leave animals that have been dead for a few days alone !! Besides starting to rot and smelling bad, they could be carrying serious infections due to the decay.

I don't know i don't sniff my knife........drop it in some bleach water (not boiling) and clean and lube imediately

I'm curious if the bleach will damage the coating. I would first try soaking it in warm water with dish detergent. Make sure the knife is fully submerged in the water and try rubbing/cleaning it while the knife is fully underwater. You can also try using an old toothbrush and giving it a good cleaning all over.

A soak in a 10% bleach solution will sterilize most everything. But if you are concerned about affecting the coating (I wouldn't be), you could try a short soak in hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide is often effective at breaking down organic compounds.

And no more playing with dead raccoons. ;)

Nothing close to a dead racoon, but my RC-3 smelled like garlic and onions after I prep'd some ribs for the BBQ. I had to wash it a few times, but the smell went away.

I like this idea...dilute the bleach/water solution and let it soak for a bit.

ok i ended up just stripping the coating, the izula is my edc so i figure if i have any problems with any staining or rust i'll notice them pretty quick. thanks everybody for the good advice though!
