Sorry for the long post but I need help. This is gonna sound weird. I bought a Sebenza 25 from a fantastic vendor a few weeks ago. Well, when i opened it, it had a couple scratches, so I sent her back right away since the knife was so expensive.
The new one came today. But, I must be having bad luck. This is a brand new knife from a well known vendor here. Upon looking at it, I realized the blade was not centered.
So, instead of calling the vendor back AGAIN, i figured let me take it apart, clean it, put back together and see if that helps, plus there was some dirty grease around the pivot, so I figured taking it apart would only be a good thing......

Well, yes and no. First, the knife went together perfect like i dreamed it might, and believe it or not, the blade is now Perfectly centered. Im not sure why, perhaps a piece of dirt or dust was in the way of the pivot somewhere, causing it to be just ever so slightly off center? Anyways, just taking it apart, cleaning, lubing, and put back together did the trick!!

But now, another issue. Hence why I think I'm having bad luck lately with knives. When I ordered the knife, I specifically asked for the most recent batch of Sebenza 25's, which was Feb. 2014. But, when i took this one apart, the handles inside say B 13, I'm guessing 2nd quarter of 2013. BUT, the certificate says Feb. 2014. Now, Im thinking I should send her back AGAIN now, since if I ever sell it, the new owner will want to know what happened, and Im sure if I ever asked Chris Reeve about it, from what horror stories Ive heard about him not being so understanding in certain areas, I can already see him or someone saying Im trying to pull a fast one.

Again, this is a brand new knife, and I may or may not sell it one day. Besides, having a knife that says 2013 and a cert that says a year later is really bothering me now.

Please, tell me what you would do. Should I send her back for a 3rd try? The vendor seemed like they might have been getting annoyed with me since I did ask more than once for them to hand pick a perfectly centered one. And, sending it back the first time for the small scratches might have been my neuroticism kicking it, so I hate to be an even bigger pain in the butt.

Im just sick thinking how I ordered this knife a few weeks ago, and just now getting it back in my hands today, just to see that everything is not fine and dandy. And, like i said the knife wasn't even centered perfect, but I won't ask them about that since everything went together perfect and all is well now. I think maybe someone who assembled it at the factory may have just not had everything lined up perfect before screwing everything down.

I don't know. Am i crazy? OR just being neurotic about my knives again?

This is a VERY expensive production knife for me guys, so please understand that I was under the impression that for such a "perfect" knife, I should have a knife and cert that match. Im just afraid that if I send her back again, either the next one will come with a NOT perfect blade or lockup, OR the vendor will really be pissed. I don't think I did anything wrong though, even by sending the first one back since it was supposed to be mint condition.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions. I really need it. Im ready to pull my hair out. I sincerely appreciate your help.

Dave

p.s. How long does Chris Reeve take to ship? When the vendor said the other knives had some scratches too, he said he can refund me my money if Im not happy. And, I do NOT wish to wait a few days for my money to go back on the card, and then a while for CR to ship one....Im just afraid the vendor might not want to do business with me for this one, and again I don't think i did anything wrong. I just expected a knife with no scratches for spending 500 bucks on a production knife.

The handles were made prior to the assembly of the knife, hence the difference between the date stamp and birth card. As far as I know, this is a common practice and I observe this difference on all of my sebenzas.

I don't know what to say about the scratches. But if you are going to use this knife, not just collect it, then you'll put more character marks within the 1st week that you won't even notice the original ones.

I'm not trying to minimize your concerns, just offering my opinion.

Yep..the parts are made in batches..the date codes don't necessarily have to coincide. This is totally normal.
Carry it...Use it and enjoy it!

Just as coiledwire said My small Seb also has scales made the prior year vs. the birth card. Seems to be common from what I have seen as well. No need to worry. I'm sure one of the CRK experts will explain this better.

I don't own ant CRK that has a handle stamp the same as the assembly date( birthday card), some of my CRK's have two different years on them, like coiledwire said, that's when the handles were made, nothing more. The birthday card is what everyone goes by. It's interesting for CRK owners to see the handle stamps. If both of the knives have scratches on the blade, maybe you need to question the vendor. I've never received a new CRK with a scratch on the blade. A pic would be good to look at to see what the scratch is about. Don't let the dates bother you, and yes you may be just a tad neurotic.
You chose a fine knife with a great warranty and service department that will serve you well...Enjoy it
btw, don't believe everything you read or hear, CRK are good people

You guys...Thanks so much for this, you have no idea how much better I feel now. I am really new to Chris Reeve knives, and this is my first Sebenza. I appreciate you guys taking the time to read this whole thread, and I can actually get some sleep now.

On a side note, the scratches I was referring to, were on the first one I sent back, and it was scratched pretty bad under the clip, from the clip rubbing I guess. But, the clip was the first thing I removed, even before opening the knife as at first the knife felt weird in my hand with the clip. And, since I wasn't going to use it, the lock side of the knife looked horrible. This one is much better though, but still some little marks that don't bother me. The last one was a bit excessive though.

Thanks again for all your help and patience guys, I am just LOVING this knife now. I will post some pics tomorrow!!

Dave

p.s.... did I say how happy I was now?

Now go use & enjoy it for many years. Remember you can always send it to CRK for a spa treatment at any time.

good! love it and enjoy it!!… when it comes to knives I am obsessive about the condition they are in and the blade centering MUST be DEAD center or I am disappointed. I also care very much about the collectibility and always take good care of the box and everything that is included. With that said, if I were you as long as the b-day card is the one that was given to that knife at the factory I don't worry about it. and if the blade is Dead center we are all set. scratches don't matter for me much because I EDC all of my knives. (since what really is the need to own them if you don't get to use and experience them.) There is only one thing that I have collected that I likely won't ever use and thats a pretty rare mint condition Parker T1 Titanium Fountain Pen.

Guys, thanks again. Its good to know that the card is what everyone goes by. Makes sense then that I got the right card.
I will post some pics in a bit!

I'm am VERY PICKY about my knives too and I remember very well how hard it was to push the buy button on my first Sebenza because I'm not a wealthy man. Scratches would've went right back to dealer, unless you're talking about the tiny ones that the clip makes on the scale because that's the nature of the beast. Off center would've went back unless it was fixed by a proper assembly like yours was.
As mentioned above, parts are made in batches, dates not matching means nothing to most if us, although I like it when they do.
Please relax, enjoy the finest knife you've ever bought, ease your worries, put that 25 in your pocket, pet it, and use it happily.
CRK's customer service will take care of you if something happens and your fellow CRK addicts here will act as a fine support group, though it'll hurt your bank account :)
Congrats and enjoy.

I think you will find that all Sebenzas have some scratches under the clip. It is metal rubbing against metal. I could be wrong.

As everyone has said, the scales are always done in batches so you see the difference in dates. None have mine have ever matched.

On the scratches, you will also find that there is friction between the clip and the lockbar as it flexes and they slide on one another. The only way to eliminate that is to bend the clip so they do not touch, and then not squeeze it hard enough to push the clip into the lockbar.

Totally normal scratches as well I bet.

Enjoy the knife :)

Dave, glad you are happy with how it turned out. The 25 is one of my favorite knives. I am sure you will get many years of excellent service from your new 25.

Guys, thanks again to all of you.. I am in love with this knife, can't put it down!

Glad you found your peace of mind. In reference to the reputation that Mr Reeve has about being a grump, that was NOT my experience with him. I met Mr Reeve at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas in 2013. I had a problem with an older Sebie, that I had caused, and he was a true gentleman. I admitted to the problem being my own causing. Mr Reeve simply said "when you buy this kind of knife from me, you only buy it once." With that, the knife went back to Idaho and was repaired free of charge. Grumpy?? Not hardly.

Wow, thats great to hear. Btw, if ever I wanted a spa treatment or something minor done, how long does it usually take? Not that Im worried about that for now, just curious about when the time comes, how long will I be without my knife? thanks again for all the replies.
