Hey guys.
I just got my ZT 0551 literally two days ago and have done all I know to do and it still nearly breaks my thumb every time I open it.
I have put lubricant in the pivot, I have tried to loosen the pivot screw, I've opened it a bunch of times and it still about kills my thumb when I open it.
Is there anything else I can do?

I really love this knife and I want to keep it but if I can't make it easier to open I'm going to have to get rid of it and that makes me sad because I really want to keep it and use it.

If there's anything else I can do please let me know.

Thanks,
Jessie

try placing your middle finger on the lock bar stabilizer when you open it. this trick helped me to learn to flip my 0550 without pressing down on the Ti side which increases tension on the blade. moving the pocket clip for tip down carry also helped keep me from pressing down on the lock bar. while both of those things made it easier, i probably opened my 0550 1000+ times before it was "smooth". with some practice and break in, mine now glides like glass and requires very little effort. hope this helps, the 055X series is amazing!

Also my clip is set for tip up but now if I set my pinky and ring finger on the clip and my middle finger on the lock bar stabilizer it works.

Lol thanks Thomas.
I love this knife so much.
You guys are awesome.
I'm so happy, I get to keep it!

Just wait. In two weeks that blade will be so smooth. Thats about how long it took for my washers to smooth out.

Something else you can do to make it even smoother is to polish the washers, I did it to mine and it super smooth now

And push the thumbstuds toward the front of the knife rather than up and out. That plus keeping pressure off the lockbar changes everything. If you aren't sure whether you are adding undue pressure to the lockbar, open the knife left handed and see if it becomes much easier. If it does, then it's you and not the knife :D

The knife opens great left handed and I've got it figured out right handed. =]
I was going to just trade it off because I couldn't get it to work but then I opened this thread and I took the advice and fixed my problem.

trade it to me ;)

I had a problem opening my startac but I figured out it was jut the grease on my hands from chowing down a whole bucket of fried chicken

I think the 0550 just doesn't open all that easily with a regular thumb stud opening. I find it wears on your thumb pretty hard after a few times. I use a thumbstud flick (just push up (not out) on the thumbstud hard and it will fly out) or i pinch the blade between my thumb and middle finger, break the detent and follow through with my thumb on the blade. I find these methods to be very comfortable.
