And a very cool little blade it is indeed, a lot smaller than you would think. although it has "thick" grip scales, as opposed to a skeletonized handle, the knife really hangs flat from the neck, very discreet, even for such an, at first, seemingly bulky sheath.

Another thing, when gripping the knife; if you fully extend your thumb along the serrations at the top, the point moves exactly where the thumb points while the edge is perfectly in line with the knuckles. This grip appears very secure too. So targeting with this knife is very instinctive, very clever!

Where´s the trainer?

Yes the Ronin is the small Fixed Blade we have been waiting for so long.

A small FB is not like a scale reduction of a bigger design but a very difficult design . You need to mix a lot of ingredients to have succesful lil FB.

The Ronin is filling this niche of a small and highly effective blade.
I use mine mainly as a utility blade and the design shines in a lot of chores.
And his lefty friendly ! ;-D

The needle point is a incredibly useful...

cheers

PS thank you for th link of Fred's review.
We are working on a new site with a lot of new infos...
But the old one is still available !

My Ronin arrived yesterday. I absolutely love everything about it--except that I'm sorta afraid of it.

I do something stupid every so often and end up cutting myself. It's been about two years since it's happened so I'm due for another incident. When it happens with the Ronin, the cut is going to be long and deep. That point is extremely scary.

I'm hoping my fear will keep me more careful. If everyone had a big steel spike sticking out from their steering wheels, there would be no more accidents. Everyone would be driving nice and slow and careful.

I'll hoping my fear of its wicked blade will help me to think about what I'm doing.

DITTO on the Ronin!

I have had mine for 3 months now #479 and at first I thought it was small also but it cuts and penetrates like a HUGE knife.

My first training session with it my eyes lit up and I was amazed at the 6 inch long 2 inch deep slash it made in my dowel with foam with duck tape cover target!!! With zero effort the Ronin cuts like a monster!

The Ronin is the best defensive knife I have right now and I trust it with my life.

I would never want to get cut with one!

The Ronin will serve you well now go slash some stuff with them!

#045 here, and I love the thing so much, I'm getting Mike Sastre of River City Sheaths to make me one of his custom Ronin HideOut IWB sheaths!

I have had my Ronin #662 for about a week and a half now. I love it! The fit and finish on the knife is very good. The grind lines are crisp and even. The sheath is very secure and versatile. I would like to find a sheath that is a little smaller though. I have an EKI Lagriffe that is always on the neck. I got the Ronin more for the belt (horizontal) and IWB. The stock sheath is great, just a little largish. I do love how small the Ronin is also. The blade to handle ratio is just right for making the Ronin easy to control while doing small chores with it. It cuts like a laser, with the combination of grind and steel that Spyderco decided to use. I am glad that Sal is not fond of chisel grinds. If this had been chisel ground like the Snody versions, I would not have liked it near as much. I feel that Spyderco hit the mark square on with their version of the Ronin. Performance to dollar value, the Ronin is a great bargin blade for anyone looking for a great little SD fixed blade with wonderful crossover into the utility field also. Two thumbs up!!:D
BTW, does anyone have a picture of one of those Sastre Hideout sheaths for the Ronin??

Just might have to get me one of them! That is a super cool rig for the Ronin.

I have been carrying mine latley on my belt more often than in neck knife form

Nice sheath

I got no. 129!

I love the sheath as is. For pocket carry I completely removed the tension screw and the fit is still excellent. No rattle, good retention (for pocket carry), and thanks to the ´bulky´ and square shape of the sheath, no weapon type printing. Honestly, in the back pocket it looks like a wallet. This is the first sheath from Spyderco, since the Moran sheaths, that I am conmpletely 110% happy with.

Ditto Wouter

I have removed the tension screw (keep it in its box) and carry the Ronin like you in my back pocket behind my wallet.
This sheath is perfect for my own use !

I hate reading this thread! In California we can't carry a concealed fixed blade of any length. I would have to wear the Ronin fully-exposed all the time, and that's not easy and would attract too much attention in the big city. Furthermore, it's got a 3" blade, and L.A. city and county place restrictions on the open carry of a blades 3" or more.

But you all have made me want a Ronin very badly!

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

you can have the handle of the Ronin fully exposed out of your back pocket ... (depends how deep are your pockets and how you are dressed up)

You can also add a little flag on the lanyard sayin "NOT A CONCEALED WEAPON!"
:p

Frankly. Here in France any knives are FORBIDEN!! Even a SAK can drive you to jail if you use as a SD tool !!

FYI: It happend to a 80 years old man with heart weakness, attacked by a stupid bunch of w*nkers called 'gang', the grandpa defended his life with his SAK [so far for SD designed knives!!!] but the family of his "young victim" asked for $20'00O since the old man cuts nerves on the sc*m arm !!!!

cheers

Hey Nemo,

Back-pocket carry would be my preferred choice because it's less conspicuous. However, it's not clear whether having just the handle explosed is enough to make it "not concealed." I don't think any court has ruled on the issue (it's been a few years since I researched this, so I'd have to double-check), and the law itself doesn't define "concealed."

Open carry from a belt sheath is allowed under California law. However, there's still the local law issue with blades 3" or more, and the Ronin is exactly 3". Also, I usually dress with a long shirt or jacket covering my waistband.

I wouldn't have a problem carrying anyway, but in California it's a potential felony (serious crime). I would be surprised if someone with a clean record was charged with a felony rather than a misdemeanor, but I would rather not take the risk. California does allow the concealed carry of any size folder, even though I would much prefer a fixed blade. If I could carry any one knife, it would be a Spyderco Perrin.

Thanks for the grampa story - it's always good to hear (except for the legal aftermath). :)

Cheers back from L.A.,

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

thank you !

I believe you can have your knife in your back pocket and figure you won't be check by any policeman.
You don't have it in your pocket to scare people.
Be cool and responsable and intelligent blues will understand your point.

So rest your mind and be zen ! ;-D

cheers

JM

FWIW - Try carrying a paintbrush in your back pocket for a few weeks and see if anyone asks to see it. If not, maybe it's time to get the Ronin. :)
