Well, today the mailman brought me a 204 sharpmaker. I got it at discount knives for about $40, which is a pretty good price for all the versatility, etc. you get.

Now, I'm not a very good sharpener, myself, but after watching the video, the first knife I sharpened with the sharpmaker got an edge that could roughly shave hair. This shows how easy this thing is to use, and how small the learning curve is. Now, after seven knives, the edges haven't really got much sharper, which I'm sure practice will take more practice, but I've gotten really comfortable using it. It's become a breeze to use, and I don't have to pay much attention due to the safety rods.

Also, the things I sharpened ranged from a small chisel on a Victorinox SwissTool, to a kitchen knife, to a bolo with a 12" blade. While the chisel was easier than the bolo to sharpen, the bolo was surprisingly easy to use. Cleanup was also easy. Just a little scrub and rinse. That's it.

The small size of this sharpener makes it very attractive to hikers, campers, hunters etc. It is a complete, versatile sharpening system in a compact package.

BTW, the video was great. It explained the process of sharpening with the sharpmaker very well, and helped immensely. It was a GREAT idea to include a video in the package.

Sal, thanks a ton for a versatile, effective, compact, and easy-to-use sharpening system!!! I highly recommend it.

Pity you don't sell the 204 base as a seperate item, I don't want to buy a 204 just to get the 15% bevel option over my 203

Hi General. The stones are different sizes. The 203 stones won't work in the 204.

sorry

Hey there Andrew,
I got a 204 about 2 months ago, and you get better with time. Last night at work, I sharpened a Benchmade large Stryker, a cheap SW Swat knife, another Benchmade (Ascent?), and a big SOG Seal knife. The folders I used the 15degree, and all were shaving, paper push cut sharp. I used 20 degrees for the SOG, and it was the same level of sharpness. These 4 took less than 20 minutes. Just takes practice. What an awesome product, huh?

General:
I, too, am planning to upgrade to the 204 from my 203. I own some knives I feel need thinning out at the bevels, and I don't trust myself to hold a 15 degree angle on my own consistently. I find a lot of folders now use more of a 15-degree edge bevel. I also like the fact that unlike the 203, the 204 is capable of carry as a self-contained unit for trips.

Yes exactly! My 203 is like new, as I am very careful with it and make sure it is clean! I think a tool like the 203 will last a lifetime if cared for. However, before I buy a 204 I will wait so I can order the Diamond sleaves as well. Now that would make it the ULTIMATE system for under $200? I think so!

Strangly, I started with the Gatco clamp and went on to the Spyderco Profile set. I used those for quite a time and ignored the 203. I was of the opinion that I did not need a 203. I was wrong, I get the same job done in one quarter of the time. Then I found the Ultra Fine Benchstone *shudder*. My Military is SCARY!

Got my 204 on friday and have to say that it is a fantastic bit of kit. First thing to be sharpened was an old SAK (like on the vid) which is now much sharper than ever. It really is incredibly easy to get excellent results and I would reccomend it to anyone.

I visited my brother last week and brought my 204 to touch up his knives. I was really disappointed when I found out I had already done that the last time I visited. I need to buy more dull knives. <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Sal said they will go into production fairly soon, next couple of months if memory serves!
