WOW. I'm impressed. Just a few passes with step #4 razor edge and my Delica is sharper than it was out of the box.

On to the next sharpening project. I have a pilot's survival knife, (similar to if not the Camillus model), my Dad's from the Vietnam war. I think it is made from 1095 steel. It was in a state of disrepair, I had to clean a lot of rust from it and there is almost no edge.

Should I do step #1 shaping until the knife has a decent edge, and then move on to the next steps? I have a feeling that it will take much more than 20 strokes to start getting an edge back on this knife. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

It won't look great, but I'd start with a coarse benchstone with a steady hand, to rebuild the edge rather quickly, then fix it up to a nice sharp edge with the sharpmaker.
You'll be doing a lot of swiping using the brown stone because that's just the medium.

If you want to spend some extra money, you can always get the diamond rods for the sharpmaker. They're not cheap, but if the knife has sentimental value then it might be a good investment.

Not to mention that it will reshape the bevel nicer than with an ordinary benchstone.

I recently sharpened an old carving knife I found in the shed. It had virtually no edge at all and had lots of little nicks in the edge too, like somebody had been trying to chop little nails in half, very strange.

Anyway, I used my Sharpmaker with the grey and white rods. It certainly took a hell of a lot more than 20 strokes to get an edge, in fact I probably spent over an hour on this knife. Fortunately the steel did not seem to be that hard.

I eventually got quite a good edge on it, still a few little nicks in there but it cut things just fine.

I've been working on the knife with the medium brown stones included with the Sharpmaker. Probably put in about 30 minutes all together for this knife so far. The edge isn't really sharp yet, but I'm making progress.

However, since my Spydies have never been dull, I'm amazed at how quickly and easily my Spyderco's can be touched up on the sharpmaker. It's great!
