581 Barrage

I have to say this is one knife that will never leave the collection. The build quality is awesome. Super solid lockup, and the materials are beautiful. I was skeptical about the Axis Assist, but it is fantastic. It fires hard but not crazy hard like some have suggested in reviews. I was thinking of removing the assist mechanism, but now that I have it I am going to leave it alone.

In the office I usually carry a Sage 1, also a fantastic office EDC. But this Barrage, even though it's heavier and not as thin, is gonna be in my pocket quite often. Highly recommend this knife...

It's one of my favorite knives. I have removed the assist mechanism and like it a lot better as a normal axis lock knife.

Mine has a black thumbstud, I wonder why.

Very nice! The Barrage and Mini-Barrage will always be the knife I think of when I see Benchmade. Nope, not saying its their best design ever or implying that it's even their most popular. But, the 585 was the 1st BM I ever bought and all the girls in my life carry one, ever since I got it for them - Wife, Daughter, Daughter-In-Law.

It's just so well made, comfortable, simple yet innovative axis design, versatile blade profile that does just about everything well and very well balanced too. Definately a keeper.

They are a nice looking knife. I recently picked up a 585 Mini Barrage with assist and felt that the assist fired just a little to strongly to suit me, but it is pretty cool. I just finished de-assisting mine and I think I will like it better.

Question about the M390 steel used in the 586. I read the description on it at the Benchmade site and I noticed it doesn't come out and call it stainless. So I'm just curious if it is indeed stainless like the 154cm.

Enjoy the knife - it's a keeper!

That's interesting that Benchmade doesn't call M390 stainless, cuz it has many of the attributes it's CPM bretheren like S30V have, and a very high degree of chromium relative to the others. All I know is my M390 bladed knives slice like crazy and hold a useful edge for a long time, with M4 being very close to that in performance.

If the 581 came with silver studs that's all the better - I swap mine from black every chance I get, it looks more balanced that way!

Congrats on getting yourself a great knife 500lbman!

The 581 is probably my favorite benchmade hands down. That is a fine, fine pocket knife you just scored. Congrats!

Not sure why BM doesn't refer to or list M390 as a stainless steel? but it lists it's Cromium content as 20%

Considering that 12% / 13% is the threshold where a steel is considered stainless, I'd say yes, It's a very stainless steel indeed...

It's also a significantly higher in Chromium then 154CM or S30V at 14%

Maybe there is a reason though they don't cal it staimless?, either way it's very corrosion resistant for sure.

Everything I have read on M390 says it has very high corrosion resistance and high toughness/hardness/edge retention. Definitely a super steel.

There are many things to love about this knife, the design is unique and upscale. But I am a sucker for a well done, traditional blade shape. The high flat grind and the traditional drop point blade shape is beautiful, same as the blade shape on a Sabenza is beautiful. Although I prefer a flat grind to a hollow grind. When the blade shape gets too funky, it may be cool while it's new, but in time nothing will age as gracefully as the traditional drop point (to me).

Like you said, if it's listed at 20% chromium, it is a stainless steel by definition.

Congrats on your new 581. I really like mine too. Tomorrow I should have a 710 and a cough cough Paramilitary 2. Cough in the mail.

Now I have to stop buying knives. It's outta control.

Hey...isn't the 7505-132 coming out in a couple weeks? :)

Sure thing...! The only cure for this is to buy everything you can; stop in every cutlery store you see, then realize you have to sell stuff in order to buy stuff, and then regret selling it, only to then buy it again or trade off others you don't want and will trade others for the same ones - and then realize it's time to slow down (WHEW) or else...! Only when you have nothing to sell, and nothing to trade do you realize you have a problem...trust me on this. :D

That's a good one! Maybe if I sell the house and downsize, I would be able to free up some cash for more knives. :)

Congrats on a really cool folder.
Just got one myself, and along with my 581, I agree, this brace of Barrage's are permanent in my collection for sure.
Had the 581 for 'bout a year, it gets at least it's share of pocket time and has shown itself to me to be definitely stainless in the context of my (fairly average) use.
