Just picked up two items I've had my eye on for quite a while now.

Benchmade 551 Griptillian (full size w/plain blade, thumb studs and black handles) and the Spyderco 204 sharpmaker system.

I'm in love with both already. The 551 is everything people said it was. So smooth and rock solid feeling. Even though the handle is lightweight it feels very strong too. Wasn't too sure about the tip up design after the problems I've had with my CRKT DOG (which I'm sending back to them because of the problems) but after handling it and feeling the tension on the closed blade yet the ease of opening, I decided to get it anyway. Sooooooo glad I did!! Awesome knife!

The 204 seems to be a great sharpening system too. I touched up some knives that were already pretty sharp and it did great. Real sharp now! I'll test it out more later with some dull knives and see how it does.

Just had to let someone know. No one around the house really cares or "gets" the excitement!! LOL

Welcome, and I pleased to hear about your new aquisitions, now all you have to do is aquire some bench stones, and learn to sharpen freehand.

Coincidentally, I picked up both a 550 and a Sharpmaker in a single shipment about a month ago. Couldn't have been more pleased. I think that almost all of your urban cutting needs can easily be fulfilled with the 551 and a SAK.

Just the need for bigger and better things drives me to buy more...

For the money, I don't think you can do much better than a Griptilian, either the 550 or the 551. I found that the Sharpmaker gets easier and easier the more you use it. Enjoy your new toys!

Congrats on two fine purchases. I also have a 551 and a sharpmaker. Great knife and great sharpener. I too, live in a "limited excitment/undestanding" household. So I usually announce my goodies here too.

I heard that just yesterday from my wife. I asked her why she needs yet another purse. That didn't seem to help much.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchases.

When you can, save up for the ultra-fine Sharpmaker hones (204UF). They're the finishing touch on demonically sharp cutlery. They're $8-13 a piece and worth it.
