Just a modest pile of split oak but this GB Splitting Maul made it easy; no other hand splitter I have used would have done as well. I'm impressed.

SquarePeg! You could try mine if you like; note the unsplit wood in the background of the picture. :-)

It's 100% worth the money, isn't it? I recommend them to anyone who can afford it and does a lot of wood heating.

Thanks everyone - I must admit there is a small part of me which rebelled against blatantly buying a non American tool so thanks for not being too hard on me about that. I have no plans to buy one of their axes; I will continue to enjoy restoring and using vintage American ones. This 75 year old body just needed a really efficient tool for splitting; think I found it.

I find that certain GB tools excel at specific jobs better than any American design that I can find, the GB maul being one of them. I also like the carpenter's axe and surprisingly, the GB Scandi Forest Axe.

However, I agree that if you wanna fell a tree, there's few things better than a well-tuned Collins, Sager, Kelly, True Temper, or any number of other vintage axes. Weight, balance, steel quality, centerlines, all make for a superior full sized axe.

I don't have a problem buying foreign made tools. We have no choice. And sadly there is not an American axe manufacturer in the same league as GB.

country of origin aside, we can certainly appreciate a tool that can do the job. And, splitting wood is hard enough without having a tool that is unsatisfactory.

Glad you had a good experience, and let us know how the rest of that pile turns out :)

Velvi-cuts are in the same league. There's just not the variety that GB produces.

That is debatable. A little on the soft side from what I have heard. I don't own one so just going by what I have heard. I would like to see for myself, but I have never paid that much for an axe. I bought my GB's before they were cool. Just real hard for me to spend that much on an axe that won't get that much use. I do wonder how the Velvet cut would stack up against a good vintage axe.
The GB's are the best balanced axes I have used. The head profile just insures that. Both in side and top profile. That being said they could be even better.

In the interest of full disclosure, the rest of the pile, and there is much more than shows in the picture will at some time involve the use a a hydraulic splitter. There's a bunch of elm there as much as 3' in diameter.

Can you elaborate? I have never used a GB, am very interested in seeing if the splitters are as good as some claim. I can imagine two ways they could be better- Cheaper lol , and use a standard replacement handle commonly available in the US, I'm interested in your opinion as a owner/ user.

Elm can be tuff to split for sure. I need a couple of good rounds as they are use full for other things, because they resist splitting.

I was just speaking of the axes. I have no experience with the maul.
