Just How Sharp Are YOUR Knives?

Anyone have a knife that approaches/surpasses the sharpness of a medical scalpel?

Is this even possible with your blades -- or are scalpels just too thin and the edge too acute to compete with?

My brother's an army doctor -- anyone have knives that would embarass him? ;)

That is just plain awesome, maximus! My Spyderco Manix coming from the factory is one of the sharpest knives I have but I'm sure that you sharpen yours to the max.

Good Lord!

Are you actually splitting hairs?

Amazing pics...

(BTW where is Skye -- Scotland?)

i would say my emerson specwar CQC8 w/a zero bevel grind blade, its pretty darned sharp let me tell ya.

Nice pics, Im sure some of us have knives sharper than most doctors, lol, Im sure they would argue the fact, but I don't want to split any hairs or anything...lol

At Kyle of Lochalsh there was a little hotel near the harbour where they made a nice coffe for a small fee. Pretty nice after a night in the open, when it was starting to rain at 10.00 pm and stopped raining at 10.00 am next morning. I have had a great sleeping bag and no tend, that is true. It is pretty long ago, since i was there but i wish i could see it again. OK, next time i spend the night somewhere else. :D :)

I had finished a knife years ago and took it to the local coffee shop to show it to a guy that wanted to see it. While in there another man want to hold it and like a lot of guys the first thing they want to do even if there's not any finger prints on it is to wipe it on his britches, well in the process he cut through his pants and into his leg leaving a two inch cut on his thigh, several stitches and a griping from the Doctor for getting his hands on and playing with a scalpal. The guy told the Doc that it was a hand made knife, the Doc said there is no way a man can get any tool that sharp, He has been a surgen for over 30 yrs and knows different kinds of cuts when he see's them he says. Well the proof is in the pudding. A man can get an awesome edge if he just knows what he's doing. I've played with several different knives from different makers that will just plum scare you. Harvey Dean had a bowie that he had made, And when I felt of the edge it literally gave me chills it was so sharp. Later, Dwayne

Sharp enough to shave with. However, I have a full beard. Don't like nothing razor sharp coming into contact with my neck.

Anyone care to divulge their big secret here, please please please? I tried stropping using a mouspad and 2000 grit wet/dry last night and made my sharp CS master hunter feel like a polished ball bearing! Any opinions on using Spyderco ceramics such as the benchstones or double stuff? When stropping, do you lay the blade completely flat? I would like to take my knives to the next level of sharpness!!! P

To get back to the original question, a medical scalpel is not actually made for the utmost sharpness. It's made to do its job while leaving as little damage / scarring as possible, as is quite right. If you want utmost sharpness no compromise, my bet is Japanese blades plus a lot of sharpening knowhow (where again the Japanese have had the finest-honed experience for nearly a millenium - pun intended :-).

Ah yes, of course! The edge pro will be my next big purchase! After ski season, of course. Many thanks!!

I don't have any pics, but I find that my convex-edged knives split hairs readily, and shave without touching the skin.
