My grandfather just passed away Thursday, one of his final wishes was for all of the sons and grandsons to receive one of his pocketknives that he has collected over the years. i would like to try and get some information on the knife that i picked. on the blade it has Deal K Co. USA. on the handle it is red with a whale on the side it looks like the picture ill share from google. any information would be appreciated. when the knife came out and when the company went out of business.

Sorry I dont have any info. Thats cool that you will restore it! I bet there are many memories attached to that for you.

Ps. Welcome to bladeforums!

Ideal Knife Co maybe? A picture thats in focus might help.....

I believe that it is ideal K Co. but i cant find anything on them on the internet. I'm just trying to figure out how old the knife is. ive seen a picture of a yellow handled one that said it was from the 50's but nothing on the red one. i have also ascertained that the company went out of business in 86 but that's about it

my dad also said that he remembers the knife from when he was a kid and it didnt look new when he was growing up. he is 44 almost 45 so im figuring that the knife is at least 40 or 50 years old

Sorry for your loss, but glad you get to take part in his request to give knives to his loved ones. Should be interesting to look up some info on the knife.

With the info I just gave my dad he says it's possible that he got it from pawpaw sparks (his dad)

I am a firm believer that a knife with a story is always more interesting and has more...for lack of a better term, let’s say heart, than just a plain knife.

There are some things that just should be passed down. A folder is one of them.

Sorry for our loss.

The knife is an inexpensive shell construction ( hollow stamped sides ) toothpick pattern.
I don't know how the steel performs on ideal blades as I've never had one but those from imperial and colonial had nice thin blades that cut well and they used a well treated carbon steel.

I wouldn’t carry it unless I had a lanyard attached to it. Small knives like that have away of sliding out of my pockets and getting lost.

Good to have something from you Grandfather. I have a dinner fork from mine. It was his favorite fork he brought it home from the Navy. It’s not worth much $. But it’s priceless to me.

Sorry for your loss.
