Hypothetically, you've lost all your blades. Robbery, scammed, train wreck, confiscated, space aliens, mid life crises, an explosion, backfired plot, underwater, poor organizational skills, or a simple mistake. Doesn't matter how, just that you have.

Hypothetically, you're going out into the wilderness for quite some time, and are near a coast (saltwater) and it's fairly wet weather in your region (think of a leather sheath in eternal damp). Motivations are irrelevant. I'm thinking mainly woodworking, skinning, gutting, and other things that require precision.

Hypothetically, you've an axe (or whatever you like) to deal with heavy chopping and prying.

Hypothetically, you've only the resources (money, time, space, something better than what I can think of right now), to buy one blade.

What is it?
Why?
What is it you find it very good for?
What isn't it very good for?
What do you generally use it for?
What are some similar knives?
What about it makes it superior to similar knives?
What makes it inferior to similar knives? (Cost?)

There can never, ever be enough 'Just one blade' threads....my search results have confirmed this.

Dozier PGK.
Awesome steel.
Great design and comfortable to use.
Long lasting edge retention.
Excellent Kydex sheath.
It aint' a chopper.
It will prep food and handle game processing chores.
I would trust it in any weather.
It is a much better value than its purchase price.

So basically your criteria are:
- Ultimate rust resistance
- Small to medium size for precise cutting
- Blade has a belly (no tanto / wharncliffe) for skinning
- Doesn't have to be thick, since it will not be used for chopping nor batoning

That's easy. Spyderco Aqua Salt.

- H1 steel is the ultimate in rust resistance
- Relatively good balance between edge retention and ease of sharpening
- Ideal length (between 4" and 5")
- Very reputable manufacturer, so it's very unlikely to get a bad batch. This is important when you only have 1 knife to rely on and can't get back to civilization quickly.
- Cost is within the range of similar sized good fixed knives ($100).

Cheezit - welcome. You'll find out there are a LOT of "there can be only one..." threads here. Don't be offended if folks tease a little. ;)

Khukuri for chopping. SAK with a saw for everything else.

Frank

Yup. I'd forgo the hatchet, and take a kuk. And for these situations, a large SAK with at least two blades and a saw. For the cost of SAK's these days, you could have a backup as well.

thx - cpr

What is it? Scrapyard DMDC
Why? Tough as hell and does everything I ask in a small packable size.
What is it you find it very good for? Chopping, batoning, Cutting, Prying etc
What isn't it very good for? Small, thin delicate work. Whittling.
What do you generally use it for? See #3
What are some similar knives? Any Bussekins
What about it makes it superior to similar knives? Toughness, SR77 Steel.
What makes it inferior to similar knives? (Cost?) NA

Since I'm getting a knife to use as a tool and not to get some perp off of me, an alox handle Swiss Army something like the classic Soldier/Farmer, and it doesn't matter if it's Wenger or Victorinox. Because it's reletively easy to get into, will hold up well, and take care of most of my needs.

Well,I generally carry a Swisstool, which offers the greatest utility. If I can have that and a khuk for chopping. Then my choice would be a Fallkniven F1 or H1 blank that I can put a g10 handle on and build a kydex sheath for. Did I cheat?

I don't usually participate in these threads, because I don't really see aliens in the near future, or mass confiscation of knives, or robbery, I don't ride trains, the creek behind my house isn't deep enough to lose anything... but...

My choice is an easy one. Benchmade 710. Why? Because it's the only knife I've carried for the past three and a half years and I've never needed or wanted more.

1. Busse ASH-1
2. INFI steel
3. Anything
4. Very Small work
5. Woodworking, skinning, gutting, and other things that require precision.
6. There aren't any
7. INFI steel, thick blade, ergonomics
8. Cost (But it's worth every penny)

What is it? Busse Silent Knight
Why? As a pirate, I'm going to need a good blade.
What is it you find it very good for? Piracy, duh!
What isn't it very good for? Non-pirate-related activities.
What do you generally use it for? Nothing yet, but since I've lost everything I might as well become a pirate.
What are some similar knives? Some other large Busse?
What about it makes it superior to similar knives? It's INFInitely awesome.
What makes it inferior to similar knives? (Cost?) Is this a trick question?

Cheezit, how long did it take you to think-up this post?

Will you be asking what is the best steel next?

The Fallkniven F1 was mentioned. It's indeed very capable in general BUT...
... I once (or twice) read that its VG10 steel can't handle salt water too well. If that is correct then indeed the previously mentioned aqua salt is the way 2 go.

So if I don't need a chopper (in that case I would have chosen one of my Busses), I would opt a Fehrman LC or a Fällkniven A1. Yet both knives are not fully resistant to salt water so I would take my Extrema Ratio Col Moshin.

I'll take any of those mentioned. If I have to buy it, I'd go for broke. Ferhman sounds good, as does something by a custom maker.

I'd probably just carry around a sodbuster. They do a nice job of many tasks, and they tend to be relatively easy to sharpen, especially if it's Case CV. They can handle quite a lot of work while being lightweight. Sure, it might get wet, but it's not gonna rust up on me if I take care of it, which isn't too difficult.

If not that, then a Buck 119. Stainless blade would be fine around saltwater, medium length blade makes it easy to use, and while it can be a little difficult to sharpen, it'll keep that edge for some time.

I guess the real issue for me would be weight. I want something light enough to carry around without too much trouble and heavy enough to handle what I throw at it (and occasionally what I throw it at).
