Hello all,

Like the heading says I just ordered my first Busse. I chose tan mags and a black blade for the ASH1. Being the handy fellow that I am and never being one to let well enough alone I was wondering about drilling out the rivets/tube fasteners, taking off the micarta slabs, stripping, sanding, polishing, the blade then either cold or hot blueing the blade. I have read an number of posts concerning everything except polishing to a high mirror finish (gloss?) so there are no grind/sandpaper marks. and blueing a Busse.
I could hot blue around 300 degrees farenheight or cold blue which doesn't hold up as well. will heating to 300 or so affect warranty/heat treat on it? and I have read you can heat these blades up to around 900 without significant damage, true or false?
I realize this is probably a lot to ask on a first post but any info is appreciated. By the way great forum and even better info. Reading/looking at all the stuff on here is why I bought a Busse now if I only didn't have to wait two weeks!

Congrats on your new Busse!! The CG-ASH-1 is an impressive blade IMHO. Also, welcome to the Busse Board!! Post some pics when you get your ASH. :)

On the blueing, I wouldn't know, but I am sure more knowledgable folks here will chime in soon!

INFI doesn't take cold blue in my experience. I wouldn't know about hot blue, I would caution getting too crazy with heating processes, depending on how hot they get things could not be good, but it would have to be pretty darned hot.

INFI does take one heck of a high polish though, like a mirror, but I hear it takes a heck of a lot of work and twice as much cursing. My INFI custom Mike Thourot made is like a mirror as are the piano keys he did a couple of Blade shows ago.

Unless you "ordered" an older A2 blade on the secondary market, you're not going to get a good cold blue in my experience. INFI is already pretty stain and rust resistant, so other than aesthetics, I'm not sure what the advantage would be.

Thanks for the replies, Progunner I have seen both of the knives you have mentioned and they are exactly what I was thinking in regards to polishing have any suggesti, looks like it would make a great trail knife but then again it looks too pretty to use (almost!). Other than that I can't wait to get it, pic's will follow and if I turn it into a project I will do a novice step by step as I am one. Any way who thinks a polished up blue blade would be awsome besides me?

some part went missing from my 2nd post/
Any way after suggestions............polishing wheel? sand paper grit and that I saw the two knives you spoke of I especialy like the Mike Thourot with the white micarta? handles

I've not seen mention of one in the last year or more.

Plenty of people have blued their Busse's, though they were the older busses made of A2 not the newer INFI. Blueing won't help you with rust resistance on any knives anyways...as far as I can tell, it just stains the blade uniformly as opposed to building up a patina...you'll still have to clean up your blade and oil it even with the blueing. I'm refering to high carbon steels...I've never oiled a Busse or had to. I just clean them after they get dirty....sometimes I don't clean my 1/300 for a while if it gets thick sap on it...I just let it wear off.

Thanks for the links, I've seen a number of threads dealing with satinizing? blades but this is the first on polishing and looks very promising. As a side note it seems from opinions so far that cold buleing is out which is fine, from what I have read it doesn't hold up that well and is primarily for touch ups on firearms but the hot blueing method seems the better way to go as it holds up a lot better but then there is the issue of the high carbon infi steel that from what I am hearing won't take the blue. any ideas about parkerizing?
