Got it as a hard use survival/outdoor/SHTF/ knife. good choice? what are your thoughts on this blade?

btw I got the regular bushman

I got one in the Bowie blade shape around four years ago. The only problem I had was with the sheath, so I ordered up a custom kydex one that cost more that the knife but works better than the stock sheath, which had too little retention. I've been surprised by how tough the Bushman is. It's not that thick of a knife, but it holds up well to batoning. Even the blade coating has stayed on pretty well. It's also fairly light for a knife of its length, which is a plus if you are going to hike around all day with it, but makes it not so good at chopping. I've also found that the thin blade means it is easy to resharpen. For its price point, it is hard to buy a better knife, and the low price means I'm not afraid of losing it or being too hard on it. I've never needed to attach it to a stick and use it as a spear, but its design would make it ideal for that, and I like having that option if I'm ever in a survival situation. I think you made a good purchase.

I got one for yard work and general home slashing:D. I don't know about hard use. Does not seem a very thick blade. I would think one of the Ontario RAT's or RTAK's or an ESEE would be better for hard use/survival.

But for the money I really like the Bushman.

I've seen a video of a guy who threw it into a tree as a spear and then bent the blade and it just sprung right back into shape. that's what sold it for me. I'm beginning to think a thin blade isn't bad as long as the heat treat and steel are right.

They are super tough and lots of fun - basically a knife built like a springy machete, ka-bar sized, with an integral handle...do you know if you are getting the new style sheath with this order?

I have used that model as a throwing knife, throwing spear, spear, and general purpose knife. I found the edge retention a bit lacking but it did sharpen up well when the time came (on a belt sander). I tended to convex the primary cutting edge on the hollow ground blade. I have considered making one of the bowie bladed models into a Tracker style knife, however I believe it would not perform due to thin steel and very light weight. I tend to wrap the handles with leather for a bit more grip.

Im pretty sure its the old codura. Either way im going to either make a better one or get a kydex one. most factory sheaths i can tolerate and ussally mods to my needs but ill have a better idea on what its like when its actully in my hand.

That's how I see them, as knife-sized machetes. I have no complaints over toughness, edge holding, or sharpenability. The only gripe I have is that the round handle wants to turn in the hand. I wish they'd make the handle oblong. I guess if you know someone who has access to a multi-ton press you could get them to squeeze it down for you.:D

Could put a couple strips of leather length wise on the front and back of the handle then wrap with more leather or camo form to get a nice oval shaped grip
