Just ordered a Vesuvius

I just discovered into this knife yesterday, really liking the looks of it. It will be coming in ATS-34; plain blade.

What can you folks tell me about this knife?

I really liked the inlay one, but too bad, it was one of the very first ones, and the lock was kinda quirky.
They had to replace it, and the Vesuvius was (at the time) being redesigned, so I got something else instead. Nevertheless, It's a very nice blade. It's one of those blades that I need to get back.

I'm still kind of new to Spydercos, only have 8 so far, and 1 on the way. All bought pre-owned from fellow forumites here. Never saw any of them, except in pictures, before I bought it. Out of them all, the only one I was the least bit disappointed in when it arrived was the Vesuvius. The others (Peter Herbst, Shabaria, Native I, Merlin, Jesse Horn, SS Kiwi, JB Kiwi) all look like I expected them to look, well crafted quality knives. Then there is the Vesuvius. The "blue shell" inlay looks, IMHO, like one of those gaudy metallic "peel and stick" decorations they sell for kids in supermarkets. The fact that it sits recessed slightly into the very "plastic" looking handle just adds to tackiness. The edge of the recess has visible "flash" on about 80% of the perimeter and both ends of both handles have visible sprues protruding from them (for those of you who never built a plastic model, or cast a bullet, a sprue is the material that hardens in the channel used to fill the mold with molten plastic or lead). These things wind up making it look like a cheap plastic toy. Then there's that sharp point on the top of the "hump" above the hole in the blade which looks to be an excellent way to wear holes in your pockets. Sorry for the negativity regarding this knife, do love the rest of my Spydies, do plan to get more, and maybe the plain handled one looks better.

There were the silver bug version that other spyder-knut also like better than the blue inlay.
I dunno, I don't think the inlay was that bad, but it's kinda sad that the lock work on that early one (it had a number) was a little off standard. But that's when the compression locks were still pretty new.
The thing about the sharp corner of the hump is valid though.
What I liked is that the blade stock was thinner than the others, and it makes a good friendlier knife than the Endura and the Native that I had at the time.

so I cancelled the order and ordered a ti Salsa instead.

I will wait until I get to see one before I make up my mind to buy a Vesuvius. I like the blade shape so much, but the handle has recieved too many negative comments from here and here. get it? :D

Try getting hold of the silver bug version for the handle.

I seem to have the only good Vesuvius in America. :) I have a plain edge, with in-lay that I use and carry every day. I guess I got lucky with mine. Based on mine I recommend the Vesuvius. Great knife for the money(IMHO). Hope you like the Salsa. :)

Blades

Even though I had ordered this one, then cancelled it due to bad inputs; then ordered three other models, this one came in and the store owner told me that I needed to come in and look at it before he sent it back.
He was right - it is number 387. The lock is very tight - though with very minor side to side play. Not a problem.
The inlay is very well installed - even with my Optivisor, I see no gaps or extra glue around the Abilone.
Love the shape of the blade.

Hey Sal - can you bring back that blade design on other knives since this one is out of production some time??:D  :D

Man, I agree with Blades. I got a blue one for my daughter and I love that knife. In fact, I've been scouting around with the intention of maybe picking one up for myself. Hers is extremely smooth and locks up great. And I think the inlay looks pimp. :D Definitely a keeper in my book.

Maybe it's a N.C. thing. My daughter flew back to school in Raleigh today. The lady was going through her checked luggage and kept pulling out blades. Finally, when her hands are full she looks up at my daughter who shrugs and says "hey, I like knives". Gotta love it.

Way to raise 'em right, dude!!:)

did they let her keep the knives since they were in the checked luggage?

I agree with the others - Way to raise them right!!!:D :D :D

Absolutely, no problem. The beauty of having a knife loving daughter is that she is REAL easy to buy presents for. In fact, I just gave her one of the Herbst seconds as an early b'day gift since she was leaving. Man, you should have seen her face light up. She's wanted one of those ever since her brother got one of the originals.

BTW Sal, I've got another knife loving daughter who just got a Public Relations degree from the University of Texas. She's really cute and would be great at trade shows. :D :D :D
