Well I finally took the plunge. After mastering the Spyderco Sharpmaker as well as semi-mastering free hand sharpening on DMT Diamond Stones, I went ahead and ordered a Wicked Edge system: Specifically:

  • Wicked Edge Pro-Pack II (comes with the updated arms and joints, granite base, extra standard stones, etc)
  • Carrying Case
  • Ultra Course (50 grit) and Extra Course (80 grit) Diamond Stones
  • Superfine (1200 and 1600) Ceramic Stones

I think I pretty much have my bases covered. Now I just have to wait for delivery.

I can get all of my knives extremely sharp but there is something about being able to maintain the exact angle each time I sharpen. Not to mention the aesthetics. Plus now I can start getting a little more scientific in testing steels.

What do you guys think of the system?

Excellent for home use. It takes some time to break in the diamonds, it took about 7 to 10 knives. Good work on getting the ceramics, this breaks the bridge from the diamonds to the strops. Have fun, don't sharpen any knives of value at first. Use the sharpie on the blade so that you know the best spot to place the knife to get a even bevel edge. And let the diamonds do the work, if you press n grind to hard you pop the diamonds off. Really, I did it.

Had mine just over a year...love it.

And check out their form... Encyclopedic volume of information about the Wicked Edge, itself but sharpening as well. And a great group of sharpeners willingly sharing their expertise.

Excellent system, I would get it too but lack funds right now!One of my buddies owns it and bevels it produces are perfect!

Yeah the first knife I plan to sharpen is my fathers (skyline that I bought him earlier this year). He is not a knife guy but I sharpen his knives when they get dull. The sandvik steel should be a breeze. I have some Spydercos (Sage 2 and Military) to practice on and will make sure I break in the diamonds before I move on to my Striders and Sebenzas.

I love the Wicked Edge system. I was never great at sharpening on any system I used and could never get the edge I really liked. Two quick suggestions. First, get an angle cube. They are invaluable for finding out the exact angle you are sharpening at. The second is to record the vertical and horizontal position for each knife in an Excel document. Makes for quick subsequent sharpenings.

I'd think lower price than those you mention for intro - like a cheap kitchen knife not over say 8" long.

Great sharpening system, but not so great for those lacking funds. From what I've read an edge pro is more versatile than the WE, but the WE is easier to use with a small to non-existent learning curve. But what do I know. I own neither and simply sharpen on stones.

Yeah the Pro-Pack II comes with the digital angle cube. Also I already created the Excel spreadsheet and bought I moleskin for notes. I bought a 10X Belomo Loupe to look at the edge and will eventually get a microscope.

Yeah I don't plan on sharpening the Sage or Military until I have done at least 10 other knives. I only will sharpen them before I move onto the Striders and Sebenzas (at least they are cheaper to replace if I really mess up).

I love my WE it is really nice to be able to get exact angles and the ability to repeat them and do touch ups easily.

I am trying to justify the price. I purchased the WSKO recently and still have to play around with it.
