I am officially a man today:thumbup:

I'd like to thank all the folks who pointed me to this knife model when I started a thread here some months ago. I went with the 2009 version Case Mini Trapper with the wharncliffe blade in SS. I got the smooth bone in blue. I didn't really like the lighter colors and I thought the dark red would remind me too much of a SAK. I'll be combining this in my EDC with my uber-tough tacticool Hinderer XM-18. I'll keep it for times when non-knife folks might be a little sensitive to something like the XM-18 and for slicing stuff. I'm going to thin down the edge as much as I can.

I did think long and hard before pulling the trigger on this particular knife. I was really hoping for a CV blade and a jigged bone handle. What it ultimately came down to was whether I wanted a wharncliffe more than a CV blade. As a light slicer, the extra edge retention of the CV wouldn't mean very much to me, especially since I'll have my XM-18 on me anyway. I really liked the idea of a patina building up over time, but the functionality of the wharncliffe was what I wanted more. I was a little concerned about how slippery the knife might feel since it's a smoothed out bone handle. Does anyone have any input on that? Even so, I figured I won't be using it very hard.

Here's the picture of the knife from eBay:

As I started looking through all of the various models and options, I started to look at the more high end stuff and that started to scare me. The last thing I need is a bunch of other stuff to throw onto my "want" list.

After 3+ years of being on these forums and drooling over the tacticals and one-handed openers and locking knives, I've finally made it over here. My interest in tacticals hasn't dropped so much as my overall taste in knives has widened. And that spells trouble for my pocket. C'est la vie:)

Great choice.....I am sure this is the first of many.........:)

Good work man. Now you need to keep buying them and come to the other side. You'll be suprised by how much you'll love that mini trapper.

Congrats on your new M/T... Nothing wrong with owning knives of different styles. Although you may find the more you carry and use it, the less you pay attention to your other folders :D

BTW welcome to Traditional. Lots of great folks here and a ton of knowledge to be had for the asking...
You will find its a little more laid back here than it is over in general. Elliott and Gus do a fine job of keepin it that way

ooooooOOOOH NICE! For your first non-SAK, you made an excellent choice.

Chestnut jigged bone swayback jack should be your next one. Wharnie in CV. The secondary pen blade's not as useful as the clip on the trapper, but, hey. You can't have everything.

All of my knives have smooth handles. They don't get slippery unless they're wet.

Mini Trapper is a very useful size, particularly with the Wharncliffe on board. I don't mind the stainless at all, but it's rather unfortunate that CASE doesn't offer this knife is some more palatable colours...Of jigged bone I have red-the jigging and build on the knife is A1 but the colour....tarty lipstick! got a green one too but this is putrid algae green. The smooth bone such as you chose are more sober, the Emerald green one I have is nice and bright and I like the diamond CASE shield. Just need some Amber bone, Chesnut or Stag options on this pattern really.

I wish Case could still do red bone like they use to... IIRC its a 5 dot, I'm to lazy to go look :D

I forgot to mention why I didn't go for this one. I was on a budget. This one's on the list for sure and I'm thinking of skipping the CV version and going for the damascus.

Yeah, the choice came down to between the blue or the emerald green. I decided I didn't want to go with the lighter color even though I'm sure the emerald green looks nice. And I agree, the amber bone, chestnut or stag options would've been ideal for me.

Mini Trapper :thumbup::thumbup:

You could not have picked a better pattern to start with (a few just as good, but none better)

Welcome to the wide world of Traditional knives.
Within a week you will be looking at your tacticool knives and thinking "If I sell this Benchmade for $90.00 I could get this really cool Case Swayback and have a few bucks left over."
You will rob Peter to pay Paul.`

A policy that is always popular with Paul.

A quick update: I received the knife today and I really, really like it. Seems like a helluva deal for $40 shipped. The edge wasn't very good at all, but I fixed that pretty quickly. It's soooo much easier to sharpen this knife and steels like on SAKs, that it's easy for me to forget how much more work I put into sharpening the newer super steels. Getting a burr on both blades was too easy.

I was a little annoyed that there's a small piece of the bone handle that's broken off. I sure didn't do it. On top of that, there's a crack that I can follow that makes it look like a larger, more significant chunk may fall off in time. I didn't notice it until after I sharpened it and I already threw away the box. I also, don't really want to go through the hassle of shipping it back and waiting for everything to be fixed. The impatience is certainly my own issue and there's nothing the seller can do within reason to deal with that. Question, is it common for bone handles to crack and break over time?
