I just ordered a Camp Knife (production) from Fiddleback Outpost. It's my first knife from Fiddleback! I don't have knives from a variety of manufacturers. I try to go for quality over quantity. I have read what I could find (and watched a few videos) about Fiddleback knives but I'm not sure what to really expect. I'd like to hear from people about their experiences with the Camp Knife.

I primarily own knives from Busse/SwampRat, Survive! and Carothers. Carothers is my current favorite with Survive! a very close second. BusseKin is alright but I find that I am selling those off more and more. How do Fiddleback production knives compare as far as workmanship? Do they do all the work in house or contract it out? Who does the heat treat for the 3v?

I'm asking out of curiosity and not concern. I am sure I'll be happy! I just can't wait to get that shipping notice!!

Man, you picked a good one. The Camp Knife is a great design for bigger chores.

The blades for the production knives are machined out of house to my specs as are the scales. We assemble the knives, clean the spines by hand, and put the edge on the knives by hand. For the handmades we do the entire knife. I personally grind each one, and shape each handle.

You need to get a machete too. We make the best machetes in the world, hands down.

Willic needs to chime in here! He is Guru of the Camp Knife, haha! Awesome purchase. I'd love to get a Custom Shop production Camp Knife someday. But a Camp Nessie has to come first!

I saw two at the shop the other day, but then you probably did too :)

Don't want to derail your original intent for the thread, but I must agree with Fiddleback and Luca917. My Machete is the bomb. It travels with me everywhere in my Truck and has been SO useful on many occasions.

Make that number 2!!

Ah crap. I knew that we were supposed to mail something out today. It is just so hard to part with these things once we get them in stock. You know, there is this emotional attachment, then someone comes along and buys a knife and we have to give it up. Just doesn't seem fair... :(

In all seriousness, the Camp Knife is an awesome knife. I do own one personally and it will be seeing use on my camping trip this weekend. I love how I can use it as a chopper and still use it for finer work like kindling, food prep, etc. There is a lot of versatility in the design. It's certainly not an ideal candidate, but if I was stuck out in the woods with just one knife (you know, because I dropped my Bear Grylls knife somewhere - like the toilet), this would be my choice.

is that what happened when you bought lunch today:D

Great choice, can't go wrong with the Camp Knife. It might be large but it is so well balanced it can be used for multiple tasks. I love mine and use it for food prep or splitting firewood, in fact any excuse and I break out the Camp. (Mine is handmade but the production models in 3V are the bomb!)

Thank you for all the responses!

I GOT A SHIPPING NOTICE!!! It should be delivered Monday. I guess this Monday won't suck! Thank you, Fiddleback Outpost, for the fast turn-around! And the great communication. I was surprised to get posts here from you! And I can't imagine a long term relationship is going to be a problem if you keep sending me stuff like the Camp Knife this quickly. You sexy minx!!!

Mr. Roy, it's pretty cool that the first two replies are from the knife maker! I'm really excited to get the Camp Knife and put it through some trials. I've got a set of tasks that I use to test knives for the outdoors. I've put Survive! and Carothers to the test and can't wait for the Camp Knife. I'll post a review on how it does. Here is an example of what I'll do with it:

Since it is a little bigger I might do this as well:

I am curious about two things on the Camp Knife. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on deciding against a (hidden) lanyard hole and a sharpening choil (NOT a finger choil)?

Who doesn't need a good MA-CHET-TAAAAAY!!!!!!! But at this point it would be really, really, really hard to replace my Carothers Light Chopper in that roll. It's 10 inches of 3v brush clearing bad-assery.

Wow. Those are projects. What did the finished shed look like? Really impressed with those joints. I think you will appreciate the COMPLETE lack of a dreaded choil on my knives, and also you'll notice the thinner edge.

Now, 10" isn't a machete. AND 3v isn't a machete steel either. We work with Nathan, who is a critical part of my team and helps with the drawings and machines the handles for the production line. BUT, a 16" machete will clear brush better than any 10" blade. Period. And if you hit a rock or some barb wire, it'll just dint and need a filing. 3V will either dull or chip, either way its hard as shit to re-sharpen and even harder to work out a chip. Try a machete. The 12" is so nice a tool you won't believe it.

Welcome. I think you will get good use out of the Camp. I'm looking forward to your review as well, if it's anything like the links you posted.

I'm up camping in Helen, GA this weekend and my Camp Knife took a beating. At the end of the day I looked over at it next to the fire and I swear it was looking back at me saying, "is that all you got". The knife is a beast. Period.
