Hello...new member here. I just ordered my first "non-inherited" Randall. A #1 with 7" blade. It is a replacement for a like Randall that belonged to my dad. He carried it in 'nam, and when he passed away last year, I gave it to his service buddy (only after he asked really nicely!). That knife, by the way, was still in pristine condition even after all of it's service. I felt I could let the knife go as he was a good friend...and besides, I still have my dad's other 4 Randall's!! Any recommendations on the second Randall I am allowed to order?? Thanks.

Wow, you sound like a heck of a nice guy. I'm not sure I could let a Randall go like that.

As far as what to order, I am partial to model 15's. My first custom ordered(ok, ok, my only custom ordered...so far) was a model 15, single guard, full finger grooves, saw tooth with thumb grooves. It makes a real nice workhorse that way. The fireman is awsome also though.

Thanks 50ae, I just went to check that knife out and it has made it to the "final round"...hmmmm, decisions decisions. You're right about how tough it was to let the knife go, but this guy was my dad's best friend through thick and thin for decades...

Well, hopefully he wills it back to you. Never the less, How about you post some pics of the knives, including your father's Vietnam knife.

You got it...i'll post pics of 3 of them tonight, the 4th one I have not yet received from my brother in Walla Walla. I will have it this coming weekend. The Vietnam knife will be harder to get as I can't find the file with those pics. I may have to request some pics of that one...

I could probably use some expert Randall-spotting eyes to identify the ones I do have, so putting the pics on will be helpful.

I'd clean the green off, but everyone has their own ideas. Just don't store them in the sheath. BTW, did you get my email?

Order a model 2. I had one I swore I would never get rid of. Well we all know how that works. I have a replacement on order hat will be better than the one that got away. The blade on a Model 2 is one sexy looking piece of steel. Still have a 18 and a 10-3 had to let A model one go also but it is on order as well I will be receiving twins sometime in 09-2010.

Ok...here are the pics of my 3 Randall's. My brother is delivering my 4th to me this weekend. You can see some green on the guard of the small one. Should I clean this "corrosion" off?

Yes, you should clean the green off of the brass. It is called verdigris, and formed from the knife being stored in the sheath. You should be able to rub it off with a clean, soft cloth. Better would be to clean the brass with a good brass or metal cleaner (I use Nev-R-Dull wadding). You should also take a clean, dry toothbrush to the place on the sheath where the guard came in contact with it, and scrub the verdigris off of the sheath, too.

It's better long-term if the knife is stored separately from the sheath. It's one thing if you wear the knife daily, but if it only gets worn occasionally, you should store the knife out of the sheath until you need it. A padded carry case such as is used for a pistol would be ideal.

All of this advice is based on the premise that you bought the Randall as a using knife, not a collector's or investment piece. Other people will have to advise you on storing it for investment purposes.

Thanks for the advice! I'll take care of the verdigris. It's good to know, because I have some old Case fixed blades where it is forming around the sheath snap and getting on the leather handles...
