Should be here Wednesday and I am pretty excited to get my paramilitary 2. Just a quick question though.
I have the Lansky stone system and was wondering if that was capable of sharpening the s30v? I'm okay with having to work at it a bit longer but if were talking hours of work I'd much rather just order the diamond stones. Also I've heard that the come fairly dull, is this true always or just sometimes?

Enjoy it, and yes, they're quite sharp from the factory in Golden, CO, but pretty dull from the factory in Yingyang, China.;)

My wife has a Native in S30v that she is pretty rough on. She installs electrical so it cuts lots if cardboard, Sheetrock, and copper wire/insulation.

I sharpened it for her on traditional stones in the past, but I got better and much faster results after I picked up some diamond stones.

If you maintain your edge frequently instead of waiting till it's really dull the stones you have should be fine, but I am no expert. That Native is the only knife I own in S30v.

I'd go with the diamond stones. I tried the normal stones on S30V before, and they take way too much time (I was actually reprofiling the bevel). With the diamond stones you are more future proof if you ever decide to get better steel such as M390 or S90V.

Oh, about the PM2 being not very sharp from the factory? All 4 of my PM2 came razor sharp. I've only had to strop once in a while.

I just use the standard medium and fine rods that came with my Sharpmaker. If you let it get butter knife dull I could see diamond stones or rods helping.

My PM2 came very sharp out of the box.

Great knife!

I would suggest that you use your sharpener and see how it works. Ceramic is many many times harder than the hardest steel. Sharpen the back bevel to 30 degrees (15 per side) and make the primary micro bevel 40 degrees (20 per side). This provides a good all-around working edge.

Congrats on your first Spyderco. Once you get bit by that Spyderbug you'll soon be acquiring more and more of them. Like DocT said, they are addictive. You're sure to enjoy that Paramilitary.

Takes a bit to re-profile S30V on my Lansky using traditional stones but once done, touching up is easy. And yes, the PM2 comes razor sharp from the factory.
