I can't remember how I came upon this knife, but it has always intrigued me. I've concluded it is the remains of a Case XX 6345. Perhaps the two secondary blades were worn out, or broken, and it has certainly seen a lot of pocket time, either before or after its transformation.
What was likely a hefty Cattle knife is now a slim but sturdy Jack knife. Case used clip blades in their Cattle knives more often than many other makers, and it is a good useful blade for a single blade Jack. This one snaps nicely, both ways, and takes a keen edge apparently, because I have used it a bit, without ever sharpening it, and it still cuts nicely! Whoever assembled it didn't make it perfectly straight, but got close, and there is no play whatsoever! And no major cracks in the bone!!
So the knife was split apart, one spring and a liner, or two liners if it had a punch, were taken out along with what was left of the smaller blades. Then it was pinned back together, and you have a pattern that Case never made!
I guess you could call it a 6145. I'll have to keep this out of the hands of some Ebay sellers I have encountered!!
