Hi all, This would be my first post:

I Just picked up 2 HTM MADD MAXX 5.5 AO's , both have the DLC coating on their blades

The first, my favorite of the 2, has a beautiful dark turquoise high gloss handle where as the other has a more champaign matte type of finish
I love both of them but the one with the champaign matte finish almost looks like it's painted on: Is this possible????? would they paint the 6AL4V titanium?
Just wondering if there is a way I can get more info on the finish of the handles of these knives and if some of them actually have some sort of coating on them and if so...what?

Thanks

Nice scores!

Regarding the finish on the top one (the one you referred to as a "champagne" color), no, it's not a coating. That's uncoated titanium; the finish is achieved by blasting the titanium with fine media to give it the finish/texture they want, similar to the way that blades are stonewashed, bead-blasted, etc. to achieve a certain finish.

That's what I was hoping for , I feel better now ( as you can see I still have a lot to learn

thanks

Aug guy - there are some ceramic coatings that come very close to the look of the media blasted Maxx you have. The good thing about a blasted finish is that if it gets "dinged" up it can easily be restored with a another session in the blast cabinet. Coatings that need to be repaired require a little more work.
