I just picked up a Benchmade 732BT PE Ares NIB and have a question regarding the coating on the blade, from what I have gathered from the seller they advised BT coating was only offered from 2004-2005 and then switched to BT2 coating, and this variation is rare.. can anyone shed some insight on the differences between BT and BT2 coating? BTW this is my first Ares I am adding to my collection and have been wanting a 732 for a long time.. Glad I finally found one! :D

Dang! I've been looking for a 732 for a while now! Where'd you find it?

As for the coating, here is what Benchmade says:
"BK1 ® COATING: BK1 coating is a matte black coating that provides excellent corrosion protection, which exceeds the ASTM-117 spec for saltwater while possessing higher scratch resistance."

"BT2 ® COATING: A proprietary blade coating that is Xylan ® based to provide excellent corrosion resistance which exceeds the ASTM-117 spec for saltwater and increases overall surface lubricity"

Fleabay.. :D Seller just happen to list it this morning.. Though I didnt get it for a steal I paid a pretty penny for it but to me its more than worth it considering they are no longer made and how hard they are to find in PE and NIB at that matter... I had planned on buying a 741 with money I bought the 732 with but keep finding these discontinued Benchmades... The 741 will most likely be my next BM purchase... ahh this madness never ends...

Can't go wrong with a 73x series, it's a classic in any configuration

Congrats Shadow...an Ares like the 732BT is hard to find...I don't know the exact answer, but BT was only used for a short time before the stronger BT2 came into use...but I'd take either over the current BK1 coating which comes off far too easily.

Nice find, wouldn't mind a PE Ares myself if I managed to stumble across one.

I have only one coated Benchmade, the 812HS Mini-AFCK, and the sticker on the box says "BT2 Coated Blade". Now as I understand it, that model was made about a decade ago so use of BT2 must be older than 2004-2005.

Thanks Joe For the kind words I have been after a 732 ARES for quite some time now I am glad me being patient has finally paid off.. I like the 732 the best out of the ARES line because its got plain black G10 scales, the colored models are nice but prefer the 732 models...Frankki the AFCK line are also great Benchmade classics, I have a 800 PE ATS-34 and I would never get rid of it, Wish I could find a 812 PE..
