Well i am back in Tokyo and decided to go walk around today. After checking out a bunch of National Treasure Swords at the Museum, i went to the bazzar area and found a knife shop that carried a bunch of Japanese knives. Picked up a Mcusta Damascus folder. Very nicely made with silky smooth action and tight lock up.

I do not think it is available in the US, but the website i snaged the pic from carries them...for a premium.

I am leaving on Wed and am pretty much up to my nose in work. That knife was 13000 yen or about $110, about that of a nice production folder in the US. The JP knives in that store were reasonably priced, the US made knives were about 2x what you could get them for at home. They also had a nice selection of Air Soft guns, which cost the same or more than the real things. Go figure.

I will plan a Sunday visit on a later trip, I would be honored to meet your Sensei. Keitei is cell phone right?

yeah keitai is cell phone. i dont know exactly why, but anyway, that folder looked more expensive.
who would have guessed.
i am still aching for one of those Saki spear blade "kitchen" knives...

Actually, i have a bunch of old Edo period swords on my website www.JapaneseSword.com it will cost a little more than shipping though ;)

I must have seen at least $3 million in swords in the 2 hrs that i was at the museum and there were only about a dozen or so on display. I do not have any of that caliber on the site.

Alf,
That is a beautiful folder. Nice wood and great looking damascus. How large is the blade and oal? Wish those were available in the USA.

A.G. Russell sells a version of that Mcusta, but it's not as pretty as yours.

...which is paining me to no end.

A.G. Russel has a plain version (without the pretty damascus) for a few bucks cheaper. I found another company which I won't even mention here that stocks a variety of models but they don't quite seem on the up-and-up to me. They're charging $150 for that particular model.

All of them list the blade as being VG-10 - just the edge in the damascus version, the whole blade in the others. The wood seems to vary. I'd have to say that you got a pretty good deal on that, Alf. Very cool knife.
