Just picked up this Large Regular...is this a CRK factory edge?

I'm still a newbie when it comes to all things CRK, so i really rely on everyone here in the forum for knowledge, info and the like:)

I picked this large up recently, and it is in very good shape. I'm a little skeptical of the edge though.

Does the edge look like it was done by CRK? or does it look like someone tried to sharpen it? I was told it has not been used, carried etc...

Doesn't look like it, or they did a neat job if they did.
The edge looks great, and ready to be used:thumbup:

I am not an expert, but I do own a bunch of CRKs, and I think that could well be a factory edge. The edges are finished by hand and there is some variability from knife to knife.

To my very untrained eye, it looks like it was sharpened with a Sharpmaker type of apparatus that utilizes a "slicing" motion. CRK usually leave a more convexed, even edge especially on the upsweep toward the point. I could very well be wrong tho.

with the few that i own(new/used), and the few that ive seen, i'd say it's not a factory edge

IMO that has been sharpened, the 5th and 6th pics show clear sharpening strokes. There are also places that look like the bevel wasn't quite met. I can see a few digs in there you will need to sharpen out too. :p

Thanks everyone....i'm thinking it's been sharpened too. I got it off a popular auction site. I've been wanting a decent shape large for a while now.

Thanks everyone....i'm thinking it's been sharpened too. I got it off a popular auction site. Here's the description:

Chris Reeve Sebenza

Large Regular

Rare and long since discontinued!

Steel: S30V

Handles:Titanium

Never used. Never carried. Never cut a thing. After it was purchased it sat in my safe ever since. Knife is pre-owned, but like brand new. If you're familiar with the CR Sebenza's, you know how rare these are to come by now. The pictures should speak for themselves, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for looking.

I think the seller of that knife was having a nice wee play on words to him self with that description. The knife may well have never cut anything or have been used by him but the person he bought it off sure has. It has clearly been sharpened, there are dings in the edge and the point is missing as well, the scratches on the handle are a bit of a give away too. :p

Regardles of that you have got your self a very nice knife, sharpen it up and get it to work. :D:thumbup:

I've never really understood the hub-bub over whether a knife has been sharpened or not. These knives are meant to be used. As such they will get dull and need to be sharpened. It isn't easy maintaining that factory convex edge unless you are really good at freehand sharpening. Any of the modern sharpening devices are not going to normally provide a convex profile unless you really set out to do it.

That being said, someone can do a pretty horrible job of sharpening, and I can see that detracting somewhat from the value of the knife. But give that screwed up blade to someone that is good at sharpening and it can be restored in a minimal amount of time with proper gear and techniques.

I think youre right haze(can I post ebay auctions) I figured it was handled, but not sharpened, anyway, will prob send in to crk/for a swedge/sharpening/etc:)

i had one sent to me a while back for sharpening and it still had the factory edge. it did not look anything like yours. i would say haze is right and that it has been sharpened.

Yes, it Definitely has been sharpened. Looks like with a sharpmaker or like device as DallasSTB stated. You can see the un-even un-uniform bevel through the edge and the point is slightly rounded. All signs of someone not familiar with the proper use of the sharpmaker. Still a nice knife though and would make a great user for edc, its just does NOT have a "factory edge" as stated. Someone was not honest somewhere down the line before it got to you.

To me it looks like the tip was lost and never properly sharpened back, there are also what look like small chips in the edge along from the choil. A mashed edge seems to go hand in hand with a lost tip from what I have seen of the knives I have been handed to fix. :p

That knife will be easily fixed up and back in action in no time so it's no biggie.

For those wondering about the value of a factory edge, it's a matter of collectibility. Like the original box and papers, it increases the value for a sale.

The knife in this instance is obviously a fine user, though.

eBay auctions are OK to post once they are closed.

Thanks for all the info guys. For all the blade issues it has, its ultra smooth. Also, does anyone know if putting a swedge on it will helpp even that point out? would having a swedge on it decrease its collectibilty factor? I'm more of a collector than a user of my knives.

If you send the knife to CRK for it to be sharpend up and swedged it will come back looking pure chipper, I guarantee it.

I have a large regular that will be going to CRK for a swedge and double lugs when I get the damascus blade for my Mnandi. I personally think the swedge looks great and it also makes sharpening the point back easier, if that ever needs done.

In that case, I would send it in for a sharpening and a re-finish.
