Man....I looked at the specs on the Khukris all day today. I think my first will need to be a 15" BAS to use for bushwacking and all around woods knife. I hope its what I expect.
Talk to you guys later.
The BAS was my first. In terms of an overall bush knife to be humping through the boonies with you, or wearing around camp and it not getting caught in things or otherwise getting in the way, it packs a lot of knife/machete/ax into a 15.5" package.
Some folks think it ought to be longer by an inch or so like the WWII. Some think it needs to be a better chopper like a 15" Ang Khola. Some think it oughta be sleeker like a Sirupati or Chitlangi.
I guess this means it either doesn't do anything very well, or, just about everything at least "passably" well (grin). My feeling is it's the latter.
At any given moment I have a four-way fight going on for my 1st and 2nd Favorite Khuks. The winners of 1st and 2nd Place changing just about as often as I take time to ponder it, but that BAS almost always consistantly places.
The other candidates in the four-way free-for-all for me in case you're looking ahead to your second purchase are (in no particular order):
1. 18" Gelbu Special
2. 18" Sirupati
3. 15" Sirupati
A few others that I like a lot are my 18" Chitlangi, my 18" Ang Khola, and my 21" Chitlangi. The reasons these don't rank in the four-way fight for 1st and 2nd Place is that although the 18" Chitlangi is the sweetest blade I've handled in my life, it is clearly a fighter and lacks the versatility of the others. The 18" Ang Khola is a chopper extraordinaire, but otherwise it's just too danged heavy to hump around all day (2-lbs) and too big for more routine knife uses. Ditto with the 21" Chitlangi, which is actually more a short sword than anything else. It would clearly excel in cutting up Uruk Hai or Orcs (grin).
