Just playin´ - scandi knife

Looks good to me. Looks to be very useful and I like that it was made up from materials that could have just ended up being thrown away. What kind of steel is it? Feel like giving us some details about how you did it?

That's a nice piece of ash.

(Couldn't resist, sorry)

Seriously, the rest of the knife is very attractive, too!

Its that kind of "swordsteel" we have been discussing while ago with Daniel Koster. Halfway between L6 and O1. Ash is cut off board from my bowmaking, the blade is forged, heat treated and then ground with sandpaper disc on my drilling machine.
Its not very shiny indeed, but thats how I like them. Its rather thick on the spine 1/4´´ and convex ground.

I didnt forged it, but did everything else. Actually forging on this one sucked, as the tang was left too thick and the blade needed very much grinding.

I gave bit of linseed oil and carnuba wax on wood, but again its not too shiny as I didnt had any sanpaper past 120GRT.
The front bone cap doesnt fit perfectly as the tang was too thick.

Professional would probably made it better, but it looks nice enough to me. :)))

Sorry guys I m getting warning from that woman here, If I bring cat or dog they ll go and me with them :D :D

These little knives is what I make when I m too tired of bows. I just use them until somebody sees it and ask for. :)

This is simpliest piece of forged steel nailed into piece of hornbeam, but sharp and working.

Thanks for comments I really appreciate it...

Beautiful bows, wonderful knives. Hawkwind is a man of many talents.:D

I wish I had kept some of the small simple knives I made when I was a young teenager. I don't know about now but back then a keyhole saw you could buy for cheap made a neat and wonderful and thin little knife blade that would take a super sharp edge that it would hold very well. Rivet on a nice piece of Pecan or other hardwood with a couple of heavy copper wire homemade rivets and some boiled linseed oil and you were good to go.
A piece of old oilfield leather belting would make a decent and very heavy sheath.:D

Did my offer of the cat make it then? ;)

Nothing is finer than a working tool made by hand.

I find it endlessly fascinating that after a couple million years of working on it mankind still has yet to perfect that most basic tool: The Knife.

aha! the seax at it's best & most basic, a practical chunk of sharpness stuck into a simple but elegant chunk of vegetation. maintaining the traditions of centuries of vikings.
