I bought myself a little Christmas present, a kabar bk7... should be here tomorrow..Iwanted to try a big knife, but I'm a little trepidacious as I am normally a 3.5-4 inch fixed blade guy when I'm in the woods.. but I wanted to try to cut down my axe/knife /folder combo down into large knife/multitool and see what happens...

I know the bk is a little short for a chopper but I think if used with a baton it can section and split most wood..

How do you guys find it works for detailed tasks.. such as carving trap parts etc.?

John I think you will like it a lot. I have 3 bk-2s, a bk-9, a bk-11, bk-13 and I am putting the bk-5 Camp magnum and a bk-7 on my list to get at the WNY gathering at the end of July. Doug

Good to see you around, John... and welcome to Beckerland.

Congratulations on the BK-7. I think you'll like it. It's a pretty good all around knife in that size, and tough, to boot. Coupled with a multitool, it should make a nice combo. I don't know whether it still comes with the little BK-13 knife as a bonus, but if it does, that's a handy little fixed blade, too.

It may be a little short for a chopper (although I chop and baton with a BK-2 all the time, and that's even shorter), but it should do a good job. It'll work just fine for cutting trap parts and notches but, if the BK-13 still comes with it, you might want to use that for the real detail work.

Let us know what you think once you get it.

I have the Magnum Camp, the BK9 Hog Hunter, the Patrol Machete, and the BK7 Combat/Utility.

IMO the BK7 is the best for all around use for just about anything. I think of it as a USMC KaBar which has been taken to the next level.

I had the BK9 and really liked it. I really wanted the 7 as well. They feel smaller in your hand than their size, so you should be golden with the BK7. I think it is the best looking too. :D
